When you have a disagreement with someone on the MRT, there are several ways in which you can resolve the dispute:
- Express your anger using your words
- Shake your head, roll your eyes, and alight at the next stop
- Forget about it and take a nap
One man, however, decided to go with the non-existent but sociopathic option number 4: assault them until they collapse to the floor, and then continue hitting them.Â
In his fit of rage, he must have forgotten that phones come with cameras these days, as the assault was recorded.
40YO Man Filmed Assaulting Another Passenger on MRT
Not long after, a short, 14-second clip of the incident, which happened yesterday (23 May), was uploaded to the internet.
It showed a man in a black t-shirt punching and kicking a commuter who was already on the floor.
Even though the victim did not retaliate and simply lay on the floor, the man in black continued to strike him.
An onlooker, presumably frightened by what she saw, moved away to another cabin.
Incident Occurred in the Morning
According to The Straits Times, the police were alerted to a case of assault in the vicinity of Little India MRT station at about 10:15am.
When officers arrived, however, the two men involved were no longer at the scene.
A SBS Transit staff member who was alerted to the incident earlier found the victim alone in the carriage and asked if he needed any assistance.
The victim declined and said that he was fine, as his assailant had already alighted.
Officers from the Central Division worked with the Public Transport Security Command (TransCom) to identify and locate those involved, and fortunately, they managed to find the suspect.
40YO Man Arrested For Public Nuisance
The police have arrested a 40-year-old man for public nuisance, and will investigate him for voluntarily causing hurt.
According to the police report, the violent assault was sparked by an escalated dispute with the 24-year-old victim.
The incident took place on the train on the Downtown MRT Line, headed towards Bukit Panjang.
The police warned that acts of violence will not be tolerated, and urged members of the public to call them if they witness an assault.
Those who took videos of the incident should also share them with the police instead of on social media, they said.
Ms Tammy Tan, senior vice-president of corporate communications at SBS Transit, has promised that SBS Transit will share its security camera footage with the police for their investigations.
