With the authorities warning that COVID-19 cases in Singapore would continue to surge, most of us are prepared for a slight jump in case numbers every day.
But none of us expected that number to shoot up by 300 as it did yesterday.
What’s more, two fatalities were recorded, bringing our death toll to 78.
Here are the details:
2 COVID-19 Fatalities; 23 Deaths Recorded in Sep
One of the COVID-19 fatalities was a 97-year-old Singaporean woman who tested positive for COVID-19 infection on 18 Sep. She succumbed to the disease on Saturday (25 Sep).
She had a history of hyperlipidemia and was not vaccinated against COVID-19.
The other fatality, a 69-year-old woman, tested positive last Friday and passed away on the same day.
She had a history of hypertension and was not vaccinated against COVID-19.
The two deaths bring September’s death toll to 23, a new monthly record.
1,939 COVID-19 Cases; 1,536 From the Community
A record 1,939 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday, 300 more than Saturday’s case count.
It comprised 1,536 community cases and 398 dormitory residents. Among the local cases were 417 people above the age of 60.
In addition, five imported cases were detected; two tested positive on arrival, while the other three developed the illness during quarantine.
New Large Cluster at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre
The Ministry of Health (MOH) has discovered a new cluster at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre, situated along 1 Wholesale Centre.
With two new additions yesterday, the cluster now has 64 infections in total.
Transmission at the wholesale centre was among workers and trade visitors. Of the 64 cases, 59 are workers at the market, three are trade visitors and two are household members of cases.
The centre will be closed for deep cleaning and disinfection, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) announced yesterday.
Meanwhile, several of our existing COVID-19 clusters grew as well, the most notable being the Blue Stars Dormitory which swelled to 283 cases after 40 more infections were detected.
There’s still no evidence of spread beyond the dormitory.
There were also four more cases linked to the cluster at My Little Campus (Yishun), bringing its total to 44. Of the 44 cases, three are staff, 27 are students, and 14 are household members of cases.
Some Disruption to Fruit & Vegetable Supply at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre
Yesterday, the SFA said that the closure of Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre is expected to cause some disruption to our fruit and vegetable supply. It will reopen this Thursday (30 Sep) at 3pm.
Around 30% and 50% of Singapore’s fruit and vegetable imports are handled at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre.
However, the SFA said the disruption will be for a very short period only, as fruits and vegetables stalls at wet markets are usually closed on Mondays.
The authorities also urged people not to panic buy, a warning we’ve heard several times during the pandemic.
But don’t be surprised if people do it anyway.
1,203 COVID-19 Cases in Hospital; 30 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,203 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
172 severe cases require oxygen supplementation and 30 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of these serious cases, 168 are seniors above the age of 60.
Over the last four weeks, 98% of the local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
As of Saturday, 82% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.
