While yesterday was the second consecutive day where new infections surpassed the 2,000 mark, that’s not the number that concerned us.
A staggering eight more COVID-19 cases had succumbed to the virus, namely five Singaporean men and three Singaporean women aged between 72 and 90.
Six of them were unvaccinated, one was partially vaccinated, and the other was fully vaccinated.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) said all of them had underlying medical conditions, but did not specify what those were.
These eight deaths bring Singapore’s death toll to 93. In September alone, 38 COVID-19 cases have died, a monthly record.
Record 2,268 New COVID-19 Infections
The recent spate of deaths can be attributed to the latest wave of cases here, and that showed no signs of abating yesterday.
A record 2,268 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday, of whom 1,810 cases are from the community and 448 from migrant worker dormitories.
The remaining 10 cases were all from abroad; seven tested positive upon arrival here while the other three developed the illness during quarantine.
Among the local infections were 510 seniors who are above the age of 60.
3 New Large Clusters at Dorms
Three new large clusters at dormitories were identified by the health ministry, including one at Kian Teck Dormitory with 60 cases.
The cluster at Kian Teck Hostel has 49 cases, while the Tuas South Dormitory cluster has 22 infections.
All three clusters were caused by intra-dormitory transmission among residents, with no evidence of spread beyond the dormitory, MOH said.
Existing Clusters Grow
At present, MOH is closely monitoring 12 active large clusters in total.
Some clusters that were identified days and weeks ago continue to grow, such as the preschool cluster at My Little Campus (Yishun) which swelled to 50 after two more cases were reported.
Three more infections were also linked to the Man Fatt Lam Elderly Joy Daycare Centre cluster, taking its total to 16. Of the 16 cases, 13 are clients, one is a staff member, and two are household members of cases. The centre has been closed since 25 Sep.
The Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre cluster also had two additions yesterday, meaning it now has 127 cases; 115 are workers at the market, four are trade visitors and eight are household members of cases.
1,335 COVID-19 Cases in Hospitals; 34 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,335 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
197 severe cases require oxygen supplementation and 34 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of these serious cases, 192 are seniors above the age of 60.
Over the last four weeks, 98.1% of the local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
As of Tuesday (28 Sep), 82% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.
