More Rain Expected in 2nd Half of Oct With Warm & Humid Nights

After a pleasantly wet August and September, it seems that Singapore has remembered that it’s supposed to fry its residents under the scorching sun every day.

It’s been rather warm in the last few days, to put it mildly.

It, therefore, came as no surprise when the weatherman confirmed that the first half of October has been warmer and drier when compared to September.

In fact, there were nine days where maximum temperatures of 34°C or more were recorded, with the highest daily maximum temperature of 35.5°C recorded at Marina Barrage on 12 October.

Thankfully, the second half of October promises to be a little more tolerable.

More Rain Expected in 2nd Half of Oct With Warm & Humid Nights

Grab your favourite book, get under the covers, and turn off the air-conditioner, because the next two weeks are going to get wet.

According to the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), thundery showers are expected on most days in the late morning and afternoon during the second half of October.

“On a few of these days, the thundery showers could be heavy, due to large-scale convergence of winds over Singapore and the surrounding region,” it said.

Widespread thundery showers accompanied by gusty winds can also be expected over the island on a few days in the morning.

This is due to the Sumatra squalls passing from the Strait of Malacca to the South China Sea, MSS explained.

“With below-average rainfall registered in the first half of the month and above-average rainfall to be expected for the second fortnight, the overall rainfall for October 2021 is expected to be near-average over most parts of Singapore.”

This period also brings the start of the inter-monsoon period. Characterised by light variable winds, warm weather, and thunderstorms, it is forecast to last through November.

Lightning activity tends to be higher during the inter-monsoon months, MSS said.

Expected Daily Temperatures

So, how cool (or warm) is it going to get?

For the next two weeks, the daily temperature is forecast to range between 24 °C and 33°C on most days.

Although showers are expected on most days of the fortnight, the daily maximum temperature could still reach a high of around 34°C on a few days.

It’s still Singapore, after all.

Though if you were hoping for an end to those warm and humid nights we had in the first half of the month, I have some bad news for you.

Relatively warm and humid nights with minimum night-time temperatures of up to 28°C can still be expected on a few nights, MSS said, particularly over the eastern and southern coastal areas of the island.

Well, if nothing else, at least the weather is unpredictable and keeps us on our toes?

Reader: I’d rather have cool, predictable weather all year round, to be honest.
