2YO’s Brain Impaled By Stick After He Fell Down While Eating Sausages

Accidents happen all the time. There are people who can trip over air and fall in the most random places. However, others might not be so fortunate.

Some accidents might even cost a life, if severe enough.

One of such cases that almost cost a life would be a case of a two-year-old child falling down while eating sausages.

Sounds pretty harmless, doesn’t it? That’s what I thought so too.

Except it wasn’t.

2YO’s Brain Impaled By Stick After He Fell Down

A two-year-old boy’s brain was impaled by a sharp wooden stick when he accidentally fell on it while eating a sausage.

According to Oriental Daily, this incident took place on 20 October in Quijing City, China.

The boy’s mother had bought him fried sausage from a street food stall when they were out shopping together.

However, when he was consuming it, he accidentally fell, causing the sharp wooden stick to pierce through his throat and into his brains.

The boy was brought to the hospital immediately, where he began to have high fever and breathing difficulties. He suffered serious injuries from the impact of the piercing.

The Surgery

The hospital immediately sought expertise from not one, not two, but seven different departments to come up with a surgical plan. Eventually, they succeeded in removing the stick in a three-hour-long operation.

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon said that the surgery was not difficult. Nevertheless, it involved great risks including bleeding, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, and intracranial infection.

That just sounds like pain to me.

However, despite the operation, the boy is still in a very fragile condition as the stick was pierced too far. It reached his medulla oblongata which is located in the brain stem.

On top of that, he also contracted a fever caused by bacterial meningitis; an inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Here is a diagram to have a better visual of it:

Near-Fatal Accident

The pediatrician stated that the stick was pierced more than 5cm into the boy’s brain. Due to the depth of the pierce, it had entered his medulla oblongata, which is the most important part of the brain.

According to Healthline, the medulla oblongata helps to regulate breathing, heart and blood vessel function, digestion, sneezing and swallowing. These are very simple yet important functions that are required to keep us alive.

It is also responsible for respiration and circulation, which means that if the stick had been pierced any further, the boy would have most probably died on the spot. Oh dear.

As of now, the boy is undergoing anti-infective treatment for bacterial meningitis and has been put on a ventilator.

I wish speedy recovery for the little boy, and may parents keep a closer watch on their children.

Accidents can happen to anyone and everyone, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.
