Every time I am faced with a deluge of deadlines and meetings, I think to myself, “I just want to be an avocado farmer”.
Yes, true story.
I would like to give it all up and move to Perth and be an avocado farmer, and probably sell avocado smoothies and guacamole on the side.
Just when I thought I would have to scrap this millennial dream, the topic at hand gives me hope.
A millionaire farmer
A Malaysia student who dropped out of school after Standard 6 (which is the equivalent of Primary 6 in Singapore) is a millionaire now by being a farmer, an online site reported, as translated by World of Buzz.
Yes, but his specialty isn’t vegetables or fruits.
As a kid, Saipol always knew what he wanted to be, so he dropped out of school and started working as a construction worker, with a monthly salary of RM750 which is around S$254.
In my humble millennial opinion, even interns earn higher than that.
But he didn’t give up.
He saved up and spent S$152 on a calf and he would subsequently buy a calf every month to breed till he was 18 years old.
Saipol said: “By the time I was 18, I’ve already had 300 cows. During that time, my father and I raised and sold cows to villagers. I saved up all the profit made because it has always been my dream to own a farm.”
At the age of 19, he already owned a house and a car (when I was 19 I only acquired stress and student loans), as he sold cows full-time.
The road to success
He grew his business (and dream) by applying for a loan of RM100,000 through the Farmer’s Organisation Authority Malaysia (LPP).
Then, he expanded his market throughout the entire country and purchased a 0.8-hectare land for cattle farming.
Now, he is a boss of 700 cattle, 150 goats and 30 buffaloes and did I mentioned that he made RM 1 million last year, just from selling his animals.
Thoughts
While the common path most people is to get a degree and sell your soul to the corporate devil, sometimes taking the road less travelled can be liberating and it just might make you a millionaire. #justsaying
