With all the concern over the possible consequences of the Omicron variant emerging, it’s hard to feel optimistic at the moment, but we had a few small wins yesterday:
- our daily caseload was the lowest since 13 Sep
- the number of COVID-19 fatalities fell dramatically
- our ICU utilisation dropped as well
- our weekly infection growth rate went down
If you missed the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) update yesterday on our COVID-19 situation, here’s everything you need to know:
2 COVID-19 Fatalities
Two more COVID-19 cases succumbed to the virus, bringing our death toll to 746.
Both cases were aged 70 and had various underlying medical conditions.
743 New COVID-19 Cases
743 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday (4 Dec), a decrease of 23 from the previous day’s tally.
The cases comprise 707 infections in the community, 24 in migrant worker dormitories, and 12 imported infections.
Among the local cases are 116 seniors above 60.
Our weekly infection growth rate – the ratio of community cases for the past week over the week before – fell to 0.63 from Friday’s 0.71.
MOH Closely Monitoring Cluster at Nursing Home
The health ministry is closely monitoring one large cluster with new cases, namely at THK Home for Disabled @ Sembawang.
With four new cases, the cluster has grown to 19 infections. All of those infected at the home are residents.
The cluster has already been ringfenced through tracing, testing, and isolation, MOH said.
893 COVID-19 Cases in Hospital; 58 in ICU
At the moment, there are 893 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
179 serious cases require oxygen supplementation and 58 are in the intensive care unit, comprising four cases who are unstable and under close monitoring, and 54 who are critically ill and intubated.
Our ICU utilisation rate is currently at 54.7%, a slight increase from Friday’s 57.3%.
Over the past seven days, the number of fully vaccinated and non-fully vaccinated cases who have been critically ill in the ICU are at 0.5 and 4.0 per 100,000 population respectively.
The same figures for seniors aged 60 and above are 2.0 and 35.2 respectively.
Over the same period, the number of fully vaccinated and non-fully vaccinated cases who died are 0.1 and 0.5 per 100,000 population respectively.
The same figures for seniors aged 60 and above are 0.3 and 5.4 respectively.
Currently, 87% of our population has been fully vaccinated and 87% have received at least one dose. 28% have received their booster shots.
Two More Omicron Cases Transited Through Singapore
MOH revealed on Friday that two more people carrying the Omicron variant had transited in Singapore before flying to Australia and Malaysia.
One had arrived on 19 Nov, while the other had arrived on 27 Nov.
The good news is that both cases, as well their close contacts, have not interacted with the community, as they remained in the transit area.
