5 Other Awesome Foods We Would Love From Taiwan, Too!

The popular Taiwanese beverage brand Chun Cui He is the latest drink obsession in Singapore and has quickly sold out ever since its inception in mid-July. Sold in Latte and Milk Tea flavours for the Singapore market, the bespoke-looking bottles of caffeine goodness are well-recognised as one of the “DIE DIE MUST BUY” items when travelling to Taiwan. Watch out for the next wave of caffeine crazies as the shelves get restocked by end July!

Other popular Taiwanese imports include Dazzling Café, Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken and KOI (otherwise known as 50嵐 in Taiwan). Being a seasoned tourist of Taiwan (I don’t even feel like a tourist anymore after visiting a dozen times), here are some recommended Taiwanese foods that would be wonderful to have in Singapore as well.

Horng Ryen Jen Cake & Biscuits Store洪瑞珍

Horng Ryen Jen (HRJ) is one of the most popular brands in Taiwan (among locals, at least), and they sell ham and cheese sandwiches – with maybe like, two other variations. Shocked that something so simple and homemade can take the entire nation by storm? The packaging is not even fancy. Well, you need to try it to believe it. There’s some kind of secret mayo that makes you crave for more.

You bring in anything related to the most famous mouthless cat in history, and BOOMZ! Hello, profit margin. The Hello Kitty Shabu Shabu in Taipei is not over-the-top girly, and guys will not be overly embarrassed stepping into this restaurant, too. Steamboats are practically immune to fads and make great places for friends to hang out, so it’ll be perfect for Singapore.

Fong Da Coffee 蜂大咖啡

Fong Da is so hipster, it has been around even before the word came into existence. Established in 1956, it has been an iconic coffee place in Xi Men Ding well-known for its vintage charm and their wide variety of coffee beans with at least 12 different blends.

Did you know that they still use their original equipment for coffee making? Talk about vintage! Fong Da was also the first to introduce the wonderful beverage that is iced coffee to the people of Taipei. The café also sells traditional biscuits and snacks to complement your brew.

Why Singapore you say? Well, they serve the best ‘kopi peng’ I’ve ever tasted – ‘nuff said.

Egg Roll Bite Milk 捲餅咬鹿

Among all Taiwanese breakfast foods, my favourite has got to be the Taiwanese egg crepe or “蛋餅” and I have yet to find a good one in Singapore. A traditional Taiwanese favourite breakfast item, it is mostly sold by street vendors and comes with a variety of fillings including cheese (because all Singaporeans like stuff that ooze!), ham, bacon, corn and the like.

One of the better ones I’ve tasted is 捲餅咬鹿 and the English name as displayed from a signboard in front of the store, is “Egg Roll Bite Milk” (don’t ask). I have always thought that a Taiwanese breakfast shop would be lucrative in Singapore, since we could eat breakfasts all day err day anyway.

Taiwan Lemon 台灣雷夢

Enough of ombre hair – how about ombre drinks instead? It is the latest drink craze in Taiwan, using the butterfly pea flower as natural colouring for drinks like Ice Lemon Tea, Milk Tea, Sprite, or Calpis.

The butterfly pea is a cerulean flower commonly used as an ingredient in traditional medicine, and has an abundance of Vitamins A, C and E. It’s also great for skin with its cell renewal properties and enhances the immune system. I guess girls won’t just be grabbing this drink for being Instagram-worthy.
