Let’s face it: in this social media world, exciting and viral news like a cat feeding a baby bear would often appear in your Facebook news feed, while important news like the GDP growth of Singapore this year wouldn’t get the same reach.
It’s understandable since social media platforms would prioritise engaging and viral contents to keep users in their platform.
In order to ensure that you’d still know about important news instead just social news, below are the top five Singapore news that was reported yesterday which you should know, simplified for you in a bite-sized format:

Low-Income Families In Nee Soon East Get Food, Toys & Home Appliances For Free
A new community enterprise called Project Hope used a room at the local Residents’ Committee at Block 227 Yishun Street 21 and stocked it up with items like rice and canned food, home appliances, and toys. The items were either new or pre-owned but still in mint condition and donated by people around Singapore.
Several low-income families in Nee Soon East were then invited to go down to the storeroom and pick up whatever they needed – for free.
The projected was started by Nee Soon GRC MP Louis Ng in January and he has since made appeals for donations on Facebook and Instagram. The project has now stopped receiving donations due to the overwhelming response from donors, but will resume once the shelves need to be restocked.

67YO Karang Guni Gets Life Imprisonment For Murdering Coffee Shop Helper
67-year-old karang guni Toh Sia Guan has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering 52-year-old coffee shop helper Goh Eng Thiam back in 2016.
Toh had stabbed Mr Goh with a knife he bought from a nearby provision shop after they got into a fight moments before that. The reason for the fight was because of a comment made by Mr Goh saying “Do I look like a drug peddler?” after Toh asked him if he sold Chinese medicine.
Mr Goh was stabbed in multiple areas, and ultimately bled to death from the stab wound on his right upper arm. Toh fled the place, but was caught 12 days later at Labrador Park MRT.
Although there was circumstantial evidence to show Toh had inflicted the fatal injury, and his state of mind, there was no witness to the actual stabbing or any other evidence that directly implicated him.

Domestic Helper Who Ill-Treated 1YO Boy & Stole Mobile Phone Gets 8 Weeks’ Jail
36-year-old Indonesian domestic helper Susiana was sentenced to 8 weeks of jail after she pleaded guilty to one count each of ill-treating her employers’ one-year-old son and stealing from her employer.
This was discovered after the mother of the one-year-old boy watched a live feed from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in her flat. She had seen Susiana push her son’s forehead with her left hand, causing him to fall on his bottom and cry from the pain. Frustrated, Susiana then grabbed both of his wrists and swung him up and down a few times.
After rushing home and reporting it to the police, Susiana was asked to pack her belongings, but before she left with the police, the boy’s maternal grandmother asked her to empty her bag. And that was when they found the phone of the boy’s mother that she stole because she wanted to call her son.
She could have been jailed up to four years and fined a maximum of $4,000 for mistreating the boy, and she could have been jailed up to seven years and fined for stealing the mobile phone.
