5 reasons why Descendants of the Sun has made me proud to be an NSman

This may seem silly, but after watching Descendants of the Sun, I felt proud to be an NSman.

To be honest, I’ve watched my share of military dramas or movies, from Hollywood ones to even local ones. However, somehow, none of them could create the kind of impact Descendants of the Sun had.

Firstly, the drama fused romance and military together—this meant more people, including females, would watch it. When Captain Yoo Si-jin went for any mission, it just sort of shows others what we went through (of course, minus the real bullets and real injuries), but at least knowing that others know what we’ve been through to protect the nation is something comforting.

Secondly, the show just showed how people should really see soldiers. A simple sentence like “These boys should really go to the army to be mature!” might not be significant to others, but to someone who has served NS, it just implicitly shows that we NSmen are mature. Yes, it may seem insecure, but doesn’t that just make any soldier proud?

Thirdly, the sense of patriotism is too damn high. Seeing Alpha Team’s dedication to their job just shows what we’re fighting for—maybe I’ve not been to a real war before, but watching this somehow motivates me to fight for my country. In fact, I’ve just looked for my ID tag.

Fourthly, it’s a show that I can watch with my girlfriend, and tell her why I need to attend my ICT and IPPT. While she knows it’s tough, she doesn’t know what I’m fighting for: it’s to protect her, my family members and everyone else in Singapore. It just makes me feel…useful, for lack of a better word.

Fifthly, doesn’t this show just remind you of the brotherhood you have with your buddies? Especially so when it’s so realistic—that in the real world, an OC and a CSM don’t play rank—they just fight for their objectives and goals.

I don’t know about you, but I’m itching for my next ICT. As an NSman, we usually don’t wear berets, but this show just makes me want to buy a new beret and pin my Singapore crest proudly on it.
