PM Lee to Talk About Climate Change in National Day Rally

Lest you’re not aware, our Prime Minister will give a National day Rally every year, in which he will speak on various issues about Singapore. This year, he would also talk about Singapore’s response to the global climate change that might affect our grandchildren. The speech will be given this Sunday (18 August 2019) from 8:15 p.m., which you can watch in practically every Singapore free-to-air channel or online.

First Retailer to be Charged for Display of Non-Compliant PMD

By now, most of us would know that the Singapore authorities are taking a hard stance against non-compliant PMDs. Retailers are not supposed to sell them, and since 1 July this year, they can’t even sell PMDs that are not UL2272 certified.

And for the first time, a retailer was being charged for merely displaying non-UL2272-certified PMDs in its showroom and online. The company was fined $750.

Commissioner of Charities Suspended all Fund-Raising Activities for Crisis Centre (Singapore)

Yesterday, the Commissioner of Charities (COC), a charities watchdog in Singapore, suspended all fund-raising appeals conducted by Crisis Centre (Singapore) for six months, due to “serious concerns about the charity’s governance, record-keeping practices and ability to be accountable to its donors.”

Crisis Centre (Singapore) is a shelter for men who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It’s not revealed what they had done to warrant this suspension.

Singapore-Based Company Charged for Shipping More Than $600,000 Worth of Alcohol to North Korea

As long as taxes are paid, shipping alcohol to other countries is perfectly fine…unless it’s North Korea.

Countries have been prohibited to trade with North Korea due to the sanctions imposed on them, and Sinsms, a Singapore-based affiliate of a  China-based trading firm, is caught doing so, and was charged under the United Nations (Sanctions – Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) Regulations 2010.

That happened between 2016 to 2017, and each charge carries a maximum punishment of $1 million. The company was handed four charges.

Body Found in Waters off Kemaman Confirmed to be S’porean Kayaker

On 8 August 2019, a group of Singaporeans went for a kayaking trip in JB, and two of them went missing soon after. A massive search operation then began.

Their missing kayak was found on 13 Aug 2019 along with some belongings, and a body was found on 14 Aug 2019. Yesterday early morning, it was confirmed to be one of the missing Singaporeans. The other Singaporean is still missing.
