Let’s face it: in this social media world, exciting and viral news like a cat feeding a baby beer would often appear in your Facebook news feed, while important news like the GDP growth of Singapore this year wouldn’t get the same reach.

It’s understandable, since social media platforms would prioritise engaging and viral contents to keep users in their platform.

In order to ensure that you’d still know about important news instead just social news, below are the top five Singapore news that was reported yesterday which you should know, simplified for you in bite-sized format:

Employment Watchdog Looking into Nas Daily’s Intention to Engage a Foreigner to his Singapore Team without Proper Recruitment Practices

Lest you’re not aware, Singapore has rules pertaining to recruitment to ensure there’s no discrimination: certain keywords can’t be used and employers should always try to engage Singaporeans first even if they have enough quota for foreign talents.

Nas Daily, however, posted a Facebook post looking for a Vietnamese join his team, and the Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices (TAFEP) is following up with him on that post.

Pet Industry in Singapore to be Reviewed and Tightened by National Parks Boards

Yesterday, during a Pets’ Day Out event, Ms Sun Xueling, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs and National Development, announced that the authorities would be reviewing and tightening standards in the pet sector so that people won’t anyhowly breed pets or abuse cute cats even if they’re their pets. If you’ve come to our app daily, you’d have read stories on how pet hotels abuse pets lah, how breeders breed too many cats lah…etc

It is still WIP and will be handled by NParks, with a public consultation later this year and findings to be shared early next year. With that, we might be seeing happier cats and dogs in the near future, no?

Workers’ Party Town Council Still Not Banning PMDs in Void Decks But is Working with LTA on Pedestrian-only Zones

From 1 September 2019, all PMDs will be banned in all PAP-managed void decks and common corridors of public housing blocks.

However, Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, the only town council managed by the opposition party, isn’t doing a full ban (yet?); instead, they claimed that enforcing that without evidence of people breaking the rules is a “challenge”, and that they already have the power to deter PMDs in common area.

Despite that, they would be working with the LTA to come out with the pedestrian-only zones, which is also a work-in-progress for the 15 PAP town councils.

New Centre Launched to Fight Myopia

Take a look around you and you’ll notice that most Singaporeans have myopia. Out of ten people, seven of us have short-sightedness.

Singapore National Eye Centre has therefore launched Singapore’s first Myopia centre which is led primarily by optometrists. Of course, since Myopia is mostly hereditary, the centre merely provides screening services and treatments for people with myopia (which explains why optometrists, instead of doctors, man the centre). It’ll also provide internship for optometry students.

123 People Arrested for Loan Shark Activities in Three-Day Operation

Shocked? I am, simply because that means there are many people splashing paint and writing “O$P$” daily.

The police carried out a massive operation between 13 to 14 August, and arrested 123 suspects in those three days. 90 of them had opened bank accounts or given away their ATM cards (or NRIC) to loan sharks for them to carry out their crimes. For your info, that itself is an offence.

And by the way, only eight of them were arrested for loan shark harassment like writing “O$P$”, but that’s still a lot.
