5 S’pore News That You Should Know About That Were Reported Yesterday (24 August 2019)

Let’s face it: in this social media world, exciting and viral news like a cat feeding a baby beer would often appear in your Facebook news feed, while important news like the GDP growth of Singapore this year wouldn’t get the same reach.

It’s understandable, since social media platforms would prioritise engaging and viral contents to keep users in their platform.

In order to ensure that you’d still know about important news instead just social news, below are the top five Singapore news that was reported yesterday which you should know, simplified for you in bite-sized format:

Police Said WhatsApp Messages of Gang Fights in Singapore is Fake

If you’ve received a WhatsApp image or video from your friends or family members about gang fights that occurred in Singapore, do reply to the sender and tell him or her that it’s fake news.

The Police has clarified in a Facebook post that it’s not true, and they’re conducting investigations on the fake rumours.

New Report Shows “Alarming” Lapses in Spize that Caused a Major Food Poisoning Outbreak Which Killed One Person

Late last year, a series of mass food poisoning occurred, starting with the outbreak in Spize that killed a 38-year-old man.

A new report by MOH, NEA and SFA showed that the restaurant, which has lost its operating licence, had more serious lapses than we’ve thought: faecal matter was detected in the ready-to-eat food, 7 out of 34 food handlers were not registered, frozen meats were not thawed properly and the same equipment was used for raw and cooked food.

Two Men Arrested for Using a Fake $10,000 Singapore Note

I’ve got to admit: I didn’t even know that there’s a $10,000 note, and if I see one, I’d think that it’s fake, too…even if it’s real.

But a real note exists, just that in this case, it’s a fake one. What’s even more interesting is that it’s…bought.

A man had bought a $10,000 note for $11,500, and it’s not because the victim failed his maths: it’s the Orchid series note, which means it’s a very old note, and they’ve since been discontinued in 1976.

When the victim realised it’s fake, he made a police report, and the police arrested two men. It turned out that the two men had bought the $10,000 for $10,000 from an unknown man in Batam, Indonesia.

I’ve no idea how buying and selling real physical money could have led to this, but anyways, the police have this to say: “Members of the public are reminded to be vigilant and to examine any S$10,000 Orchid Series notes as they are not commonly available and in circulation.”

To think I’m having difficulty just to earn a $10 note.

ROM Building to be Revamped by Mid-2020 to Look More…Romantic

If you’re lucky enough to be married, you’d have been to the ROM building, and the building and procedures are akin to a polyclinic: it doesn’t feel “romantic”.

And because of this, 140 students have come out with new designs and ideas to revamp the 36-year-old building that was last refurbished in 2010. This includes more trees, a garden to place the waiting area and even more greenery everywhere.

Maybe more Singaporeans would marry and give birth to many babies after this, and our low birth rate problem would finally be solved #canmeh?
