5 S’pore News That You Should Know About That Were Reported Yesterday (30 September 2019)

Let’s face it: in this social media world, exciting and viral news like a cat feeding a baby beer would often appear in your Facebook news feed, while important news like the GDP growth of Singapore this year wouldn’t get the same reach.

It’s understandable since social media platforms would prioritise engaging and viral contents to keep users in their platform.

In order to ensure that you’d still know about important news instead just social news, below are the top five Singapore news that was reported yesterday which you should know, simplified for you in a bite-sized format:

Non-NUS Student Filmed Woman In Toilet & Police Posted His Image Online; His Father Brought Him In Instead

16-year-old teen, Muhammad Nur Haiqel Shazali, recorded a 20-year-old woman relieving herself in a toilet in Anchorvale Community Club. However, he hit his hand against the toilet door, which made the victim notice him.

She screamed, and he subsequently fled.

But CCTV cameras caught his face, and the police swiftly used the footage in their online posting, which requested public assistance for more information.

In a twist to the tale, Haiqel’s own father recognised that it was his son, and he eventually brought his son to the Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre.

On 26 September, Muhammad Nur Haiqel Shazali, aged 16, was sentenced to 21 months of split probation.

IKEA Recalls Children’s Bibs

Yesterday, IKEA announced a recall of its MATVRA children’s bib in red and blue.

According to IKEA Sweden’s business area manager Emelie Knoester, “It has come to our attention that there is a risk for the button to come off if the child pulls at it.”

No known incidents have been reported in Singapore, but IKEA’s of course playing it safe.

This only affects the blue and red bibs; the other two designs in the same line (MATVRA fruit/vegetable pattern in green and yellow) are safe to use as they are of different material and design.

Customers who had bought them are advised not to use them, and return the product for a full refund or for a similar product. Proof of receipt isn’t required.

Father Threatened Son With Knife After He Was Caught Badmouthing Him In Toa Payoh

The incident occurred at a playground near Block 106 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh at around 6pm, according to Lianhe Zaobao.

An eyewitness had told the police that the man in question had overheard his 14-year-old son badmouthing him and therefore picked a fight.

It was reported that the argument went to and fro for one and a half hours before the father shouted “Parang Knife!” and rushed back to his ground-floor flat, where he changed clothes and returned with a 10cm “machete”.

The father allegedly ran 100m to Braddell MRT station while holding the knife.

SG-JB MRT Deadline Extended One More Month

It’s official.

Your SG-JB MRT dreams have just been dashed. By another month.

The deadline has been extended until 31 October 2019: The deadline to decide whether to continue the construction, not a deadline to start anything.

A real bummer, and we shall just let Greta speak our minds:

“How dare you?!”

Bus Driver Commended For Putting Out Fire In Lorry At Tuas

Not everybody can be a superhero like Thor.

But everyone can be a hero. In some way or another.

On Thursday morning (26 September), 38-year-old bus driver Thian Siew Mui was driving bus service 247 along her usual route in Tuas when she noticed the side of a lorry on fire.

She and another lorry driver stopped their vehicles along the side of the road. Two of the lorry drivers tried their best to put out the fire with three bottles of mineral water.

In a video taken by presumably one of the passengers on that bus, Ms Thian can be seen running towards the lorry and extinguishing the flames. She also made sure to check that the fire was indeed put out before returning back to her bus.

Kudos, Ms Thian! #respect
