Private Hospitals Now Have To Draw Patient’s Blood Samples Twice

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has just made it a requirement for all private hospitals to draw two separate blood samples from patients so as to eliminate the error of labelling the blood samples wrongly and to improve patient safety.

The reason for this is that the potential for the error of identifying the wrong blood type is high. This leads to the transfusion of incompatible blood to the patient, which will then cause severe complications including death.

The second blood sample has to be taken at a different session from the first so as to act as a buffer confirmation, ensuring that the chances of labelling the wrong blood type will be lower.
