5 valid reasons why llaollao is still alive even though the froyo trend died long ago

Yami Yoghurt, Sogurt, Frolick – these used to be huge names back in the day. If you’re a 90s kid, you’d probably remember lepak-ing at some of these places with your friends after school.

Right now, all of these brands have seemingly disappeared – together with the frozen yoghurt craze – apart from llaollao.

Since its first outlet opened here in 2013, the Spanish froyo brand has expanded to a total of 25 stores across the island – and when I say across, I do mean across.

From the ulu NTU in the West to Tampines Mall in the East, llaollao is quite literally taking over Singapore from one end to another.

The question is: why? What made them so popular in just a few short years? And why are they still surviving?

1. llaollao gives people the perception that it’s healthy.

Keyword being: perception. As long as people think it doesn’t cause that much harm to their waistline, they’ll keep coming back. After all – you’d think it’s less sinful than a McFlurry from McDonald’s or a tub of B&Js. All this boils down to good marketing.

Here’s what llaollao wrote on their website: Llaollao is Frozen Yogurt. As it’s natural, it’s one of the healthiest and most recommended products in the world, thanks to the goodness in it and its high nutritional value.

It is made from skimmed milk at the moment of serving and combined with the finest toppings (from freshly-chopped seasonal fruits to cereals, fun crunchy toppings and delicious sauces), making it even more delicious and healthy.

The one word that keeps coming up? Healthy.

2. llaollao isn’t stingy with their discounts.

Who doesn’t love freebies? llaollao even has 1-for-1 deals from time to time – and you can be sure that the queues on those days are going to be extra long. Also, this “grab a friend” (top right) concept works so well.

You get a discount; they get a potential new customer. Everybody wins.

3. It’s super insta-worthy.

This is the most basic reason of all – but that doesn’t make it any less true. How many times have you visited a café because of your friends’ Instagram photos?

Just look at this cup of decadent goodness. You can find more drool-worthy photos on the #llaollao tag on Instagram – over 100k of them in fact.

4. The llaollao guys are super, uber creative.

Right now, llaollao offers 5 crunch toppings, 11 fruit toppings and 6 sauces – which is a lot of choices – but they’re constantly coming up with new ones.

After the popularity of their caramelised biscuit crunch, llaollao came up with the sauce version of that – creamy caramel sauce (also known by many as “cookie sauce”).

And who could forget their one-day-only llaoMango? It was just a mango flavoured version of their usual froyo, but still, it got snapped up pretty quickly.

5. It just tastes that good.

No F&B brand – no matter how many perks they come up with – can survive if their food tastes bad. And if llaollao tastes half as good as it looks, they’re okay.
