Hougang Man Allegedly Tells Woman Who Overstayed for 3 Years to Hide in Wardrobe as ICA Officers Arrive

A 30-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly harboured an Indonesian woman who had overstayed in Singapore for about three years.

According to Mothership, the woman’s special pass expired in May 2023, but she allegedly continued staying in Singapore until Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officers turned up at a Hougang flat in May 2026.

When the officers arrived, the man allegedly told her to hide in a wardrobe.

Woman Allegedly Hid in Wardrobe During ICA Visit

The case centres on what allegedly happened when ICA officers went to the Hougang unit in May 2026.

The 30-year-old man is accused of harbouring the Indonesian woman after her special pass had expired. In Singapore, a special pass is a document that allows a foreigner to remain here for a specific purpose, such as assisting in investigations or awaiting the outcome of immigration or employment matters.

Once such a pass expires and the person has not left Singapore, ICA states that the person will be deemed an overstayer.

According to Mothership, the man allegedly told the woman to hide in a wardrobe when ICA officers arrived. He also allegedly instructed another man to delete messages from her phone.

That part is important because the case is not just about someone staying past the allowed period. It also involves allegations that steps were taken to conceal her from officers.

Man Has Been Charged

The man has been charged in court and has indicated that he intends to plead guilty, according to Mothership.

At this stage, the case has not been concluded, so the allegations against him have not yet resulted in a conviction.

For harbouring offences, ICA says a person who knowingly or recklessly harbours overstayers or illegal immigrants can face between six months and two years in jail, as well as a fine of up to S$6,000.

A person who negligently harbours overstayers or illegal immigrants can be fined up to S$6,000, jailed for up to 12 months, or both.

What ICA Says Landlords and Hosts Must Check

ICA has repeatedly said that people who rent out their premises must check whether foreign tenants are allowed to stay in Singapore legally.

This includes checking the person’s original immigration or work pass, matching the details against the person’s passport, and verifying the validity of the pass with the issuing authority.

For ICA-issued special passes, ICA says the expiry date is printed on the back of the physical card. For an electronic special pass, the last day of stay can be found on the pass or checked through the e-Pass Enquiry Portal.

In other words, “I thought still can” is not the kind of defence anyone should casually rely on when immigration documents are involved.
