We love getting new shoes, but new shoes have a bad habit of biting us and getting first blood before they settle down.

It can be quite a troublesome, not to mention a painful process trying to break into that new pair of shoes.

Here are 5 simple ways you can have in dealing with ‘biting’ shoes easily so that you won’t have to fear whenever you’re wearing a pair of shoes for the first time.

Bite it before it can bite you

Okay, this can be a tad unhygienic, but most of us in the office have tried it (with brand new shoes and cleaned beforehand) and it generally works.

Depending on how hard you bite and chew, you won’t even suspect it’s new when you put it on for the first time.

While there’s no scientific reason behind this, it has generally worked for us, our parents and our grandparents, so why not?

Step on the heel area when you walk.

Alright, this is a little bit unconventional; okay, fine, very unconventional but it works for me.

My previous shoe broke down on me, and I had to get a new one urgently. I did not have time to break it in and wore it to work the next day.

What I did was leave the back part of my feet out of the shoe and step on the heel area, exerting pressure on it whenever I walked.

One hour later, the shoes didn’t bite anymore.

Burn the candle and drip wax on the area that bites your foot.

Give it three or four coatings and you’ll have a few layers of protection between your feet and the shoes.

Of course, once you’ve worn down these layers, you’re back to square one.

However, by then, you would have (hopefully) broken into them.

Use a plaster on the bite area

Most people paste a piece of plaster on the back of their ankle, providing a layer of protection between the shoe and you.

It’s a sound idea, but the plaster will keep getting rubbed off your ankle.

Here’s what we suggest: get a plaster with a smooth side and paste it on the area of your shoes instead.

It won’t slip off, but your shoes will probably look weird instead.

Rub the unbroken area with sandpaper

Sandpaper is used to smooth planes on the wood, so why not use it to smooth the unbroken areas of your shoes too?

Sand diligently with sandpaper and you’ll have a smooth transition into your new pair of shoes…literally!
