If you’ve time travelled from 2000 to 2018, and make your way down to Punggol, you might be in for a shock.
After all, in 2000, Punggol used to be a place for new BTO owners: comprising many young families, the estate is considered so “immature” that people would look at the place as mere resting pods: places for residents to just sleep.
Fast-forward to 2018, and we’ve got numerous shopping malls, lots of amenities, a park that BTO-ed with rivers and even an island that has a cow.

And guess what? It’s going to get even more lit with a new Town Hub that’ll definitely jack up the prices of the flat there.
Here are six facts about this Hub that everyone, even non-Punggolites, are talking about.
First Thing First: What is a “Hub”?
I won’t blame you if you think that it’s yet another shopping centre. Given the influx of malls popping out every year, you’ll be forgiven to associate it, say, Ang Mo Kio Hub.
But it isn’t.
Its owner is People’s Association, so in other words, it’s not exactly a commercial mall.
And unlike malls, it wouldn’t just have shops and F&B establishments: these “Town Hubs” include community and lifestyle facilities, like swimming pools, stadiums, libraries and even playgrounds.
And of course these facilities aren’t by commercial entities but by non-profit organizations.
Just think of it as a “mall” that’s integrated with those individual amenities scattered across the town. Or a mall that married CCs and sports complexes.
This Isn’t the First Town Hub
Most of you would know about this, but for the benefits of people living in the west who think that the Tampines is as far as Mars, I’ll still have to include this in.
Another Town Hub called “Our Tampines Hub” is the first of such hub. Officially opened last year on August, it was “born out of ideas of thousands of residents”. Here are some of the facilities it has other than the usual shops and F&B outlets:
- 5,000-seat stadium
- 6 swimming pools
- 30-lane bowling lane
- 1,800-seat sports hall
- Indoor playground
- Gym (by ActiveSG)
- Rock-climbing facility
- Library
- Arts theatre (not for movies, but they can be used for movie screening, too)
- Garden
- All CC facilities
- 12 Government agencies with 24 Public Service Centre
Yah, now you know why everyone’s excited about the Punggol Town Hub.
Announcement of Punggol Town Hub
So, what’s with the announcement?
According to reports, the announcement was made during a ground-breaking ceremony for the 42,300 sqm hub on 7 October 2018 morning, which is also done in conjunction with a Children’s Day celebration.
And along with the announcement was a line of supercars for a charity drive.
Not sure what’s the link, but supercars leh. Who would mind?
Opening Date of the Punggol Town Hub
The opening date of the Punggol Town Hub would be in 2021 – that’s almost three years from now. The exact date isn’t confirmed yet, but there could be a possibility of a soft launch before the official launch.
For example, Our Tampines Hub has a soft launch since November 2016 (whereby some shops and facilities are already open), and its official launch is on August 2017.
So cross your fingers.
