Remember the days before Netflix and YouTube? Every weekday at 10, we would camp in front of our TVs without fail, waiting for the latest TVB drama to start airing. But as we got older, TV stopped being a thing, and we subsequently forgot about our favourite Cantonese-speaking actors.

So here’s a recap of Hong Kong stars we used to worship back in the day, but have long forgotten about. Cue the memories.

Raymond Lam

This 36-year-old heartthrob was so popular back in the day, charming everyone with his good looks and amazing acting chops (did I mention, this man can sing?). From Wuxia series Twin of Brothers (大唐双龙传) to modern-day set Moonlight Resonance (家好月圆), Raymond Lam proves that he can handle any genre thrown at him.

Ron Ng

Before Song Joong Ki, there was Ron Ng. The dashing 36-year-old won TVB’s Most Improved Actor Award in 2004 with his performance in Twin of Brothers, but he only became a household name after drama series Triumph in the Skies aired.

Since then, Ron has frequently been a contender for TVB’s Best Actor and Favourite TV character award. He was also among the four TVB actors selected to be the spokespeople of the 2006 World Cup alongside Raymond Lam, Kevin Cheng and Bosco Wong.

Edison Chen

Edison Chen starred in many popular films including Infernal Affairs, Infernal Affairs II, and Initial D. Sadly, the 35-year-old might be famous for all the wrong reasons. Back in 2008, intimate photos of him with various women, including actresses Gillian Chung, and Cecilia Cheung, were leaked.

Up to this day, the moment someone mentions the name “Edison Chen”, the first thing that comes to mind would be his photo scandal.

Bosco Wong

The ex-model’s breakthrough role came in the form of TV series Wars of In-Laws, which helped him clinch 2005’s TVB’s Most Improved Actor Award. His subsequent performance as a socially inept teenager in Dicey Business earned him even more recognition as a rising actor.

Bosco then moved on to the big screen as the male lead of Love In Time, where he took on the role of “Chiu Bing”, a low-class ice cream vendor. He was critically acclaimed for his sincere, realistic and moving performance.

Charmaine Sheh

One of the 大姐s of the Hong Kong drama scene, Charmaine Sheh’s early career was met with much criticism – people found her squeaky voice annoying, and her acting skills weak. However, she overcame these problems and made her breakthrough in 2000 with Return of the Cuckoo, eventually becoming a highly acclaimed and respected actress.

In 2006, Charmaine became the first ever TVB actress to bag two major awards at a single TVB Anniversary Awards ceremony, winning the Best Actress Award and My Favourite Female TV Character for her performance in Maidens’ Vow. She also became the first actress to be crowned double TV Queen twice.

Myolie Wu

Myolie rose to popularity after drama series Survivor’s Law and Triumph in the Skies, and in 2005, TVB aired five serials in which Myolie was the lead actress. She received further acknowledgement for her acting in the hit series Wars of In-Laws alongside co-star Bosco Wong (which was also what sparked their dating rumours).

To show her dedication towards her craft, Myolie put on a lot of weight for her role as an overweight woman in the 2006 television series To Grow With Love.

For her performance, she was awarded “Best Comedy Performance by an Actress” at the Asian Television Award, making her the first Hong Kong artiste to win an award at the prestigious ceremony. In 2015, Myolie left TVB after 16 years to explore new prospects. Right now, she’s the co-owner of bridal studio business Kevolie, in which she invested a whopping seven-figure sum.
