6 things we always do when there’s a relief teacher around

Remember how we always dreaded sitting through hours and hours of boring lessons? So much so that we even pray for our teachers to take MC or for MOE to schedule more meetings for them during curriculum hours.  Even that 1 period of freedom meant so much to us. Relief teachers are “crowned” as angels and having them around is never a bad thing. Here are some things we do when there’s a relief teacher around.

Party time!
It’s always a good time when our teachers are not around. When the relief teacher takes over, that’s when all the chaos will start. We start gathering in groups to chat, make jokes, start paper ball fights, etc. Through years of observation, many relief teachers are quite easy-going. The only thing they’re concerned about is the noise level. Just quieten down for a little while when he/she thinks the class is too noisy and then boom, the bustle will resume. Their job as relief teachers is just to jaga or rather babysit the students.

Chiong ah!
When examinations or common tests are round the corner, there’ll never be sufficient time to prepare well for every single subject. Well, at least we students think so. Hence, time is precious for us. Whenever there’s a free period, we’ll use the time to start mugging for the next paper. Anyway, when the maths paper is on the next day, who actually has the time to think about Newton’s three laws of motion?

Must get the class ready for school events!
Occasionally, when the relief teacher is in, the class monitors will take over to facilitate the class on admin matters. Although these things could be done during class contact time, sometimes it was never enough.  For example, my class had to plan what we wanted to do for Enterprise Day. This event was similar to a school carnival and every class had to set up their own stall,  either selling things or providing a service. Besides, the monitors will also need class representatives to volunteer to play for the inter-class games. They need time to put down names. Also, many of us would have had the experience of  giving suggestions for the design and colours of our class t-shirts. What a better time to do it without the presence of your form teachers? This is a better environment for classmates to voice out objections without feeling the pressure of the teachers watching them. Additionally, things can get done faster too.

Today got another recess!
Many students take this opportunity to sneak in food and snacks. For students with their classrooms nearer to the canteen, you’re so lucky. My classmates would often ask for permission to use the washroom and end up coming back with a handful of snacks and drinks. If you’re fortunate, your relief teacher may even jokingly ask you to share some with him/her. Many of them might just close one eye provided you don’t dirty the classroom and remember to clean up after yourself!

Nap time lor!
After a long day of monotonous and content-heavy lessons, wouldn’t it be nice to have a minute to recharge yourself? Having a good snooze will keep you focused for the lessons up ahead. Just write “DO NOT DISTURB” on a piece of writing paper and you’re good to go.

Free tuition!
Majority of the relief teachers are subject teachers as well. With that, you can get free consultation and clarity doubts with them. Doesn’t it just make things so much easier for you? You save some time of staying back after school just to look for teachers for consultation. This means more free time or more time to complete your homework! This is what I mean by killing two birds with one stone. 😉

Sometimes we can’t help but feel bad for taking advantage of the relief teacher’s kindness. However, students like us just wanna have fun and relax for a little while. After all, moments like these are what makes our education journey unforgettable. Many years later, all of us will look back upon at these fond memories and we’ll all miss going to school.
