Instant noodles used to be the go-to meal for broke students like you and me. Too broke for a plate of char kway teow at the coffee shop? No problem! I’ll just go for a bowl of Maggie Mee Assam flavour.
But just like the doughnuts we’ve talked about in our video about food fads, some insanely smart people decided to jazz instant noodles up and make it more than a poor man’s meal.
With all that jazzing comes the increased price as well. Am I the only one that sees the price of instant noodles increasing on the shelves of Fairprice? Yes, even the cheap ones.
But of course, the point of this article isn’t to complain about things getting more expensive. I’m pretty sure you guys have enough of that in your everyday conversations with your mum.
Instead, here is the list of 7 best instant noodles that cost more than a hawker meal. A hawker meal, in this case, that costs $3. And a bonus right at the end.
1. Prima Taste Laksa La Mian ($9.95)
And if we’re talking about best instant noodles, this is one that’s never off the list. Aromatic spices, coconut powder milk and springy noodles. What’s not to like?! Except for the price, that is.
2. Prima Taste Chilli Crab La Mian ($9.95)
If you’re Singaporean, you’ll love this because we all go absolutely crazy over chilli crab. From chilli crab puffs from Old Chang Kee to Chilli Crab pizzas, we can’t say no to them.
3. Samyang Hot Chicken Ramen ($5.90)
We love anything Korean but really, if you’re a fan of Korean fare and you are not intimidated by the spiciness, this is a good one to try. It’s so spicy it’ll make you sweat but seriously, sweating has never tasted so good.
4. Ah Lai Penang White Curry Noodles ($4.50)
If you were to ask me, this will probably be my favouritest (yes, I just created it on the spot.) instant noodle all around. This humble looking packet of instant noodles is so incredibly aromatic you’ll feel like you’re eating the real thing.
The only drawback? It’s so damn small but what instant noodles isn’t, right?
5. Samyang Instant Noodles – U-dong ($4.45)
Want to know what’s the fun thing about this instant noodle? The noodles are springy but thicker, giving you that satisfying 口感 that makes you just shiver in delight. If you’re in the mood for something filling but don’t want to go for two packets of noodles, this is the one to go for.
6. Nongshim Kimchi Ramyun ($3.95)
When you think of Kimchi Ramen, Nongshim is one that comes to mind every. Single. Time. That distinctive red packaging will stay in our memories forever. The noodles are thicker than normal maggie mee and the dried kimchi bits give that bowl of noodles an extra bang.
7. Nissin Ramen Kyushu Black ($3.55)
Enough about Korean noodles. If you’re a fan of Japanese ramen, especially the broth, this is one instant noodle you should never miss.
BONUS: Ibumie Instant Har Mee ($1.95)
Okay, I know this article is supposed to talk about expensive instant noodles, but seriously, there’s a best in the title and I just couldn’t leave this out.
This, the Penang Har Mee, is the best. It’s cheap, amazingly delicious and savoury.
And best of all, you can use it to make dry prawn noodles as well. Simply cook the noodles and drain it dry, mix the seasoning together on a plate, add a bit of boiling water and mix it together.
Serve while hot, paradise awaits you.
