Okay, it’s clear now: any hopes of the coronavirus taking a break and case numbers going down will have to be put on hold for quite some time.
Yesterday (7 Oct) was the third day in a row that new COVID-19 cases had surpassed the 3,000 mark.
No new clusters were added, but, sadly, three more COVID-19 cases succumbed to the disease.
Here are the details:
3 COVID-19 Fatalities; Two Were Fully Vaccinated
Of the three COVID-19 fatalities, two were men and one was a woman. They were aged between 57 and 90.
Two were fully vaccinated against COVID-19, while the other was unvaccinated.
All three had various underlying medical conditions, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.
With these three deaths, Singapore’s death toll now stands at 136.
3,483 New COVID-19 Infections
3,483 new infections were recorded yesterday, comprising 2,783 cases in the community and 692 dormitory residents.
The remaining 8 cases are all from abroad; one was detected upon arrival while the other seven developed the illness during quarantine.
Among the local cases are 607 seniors above the age of 60.
Nursing Home Cluster Continues to Grow
No new clusters were identified yesterday, but several of our existing clusters grew.
This includes the United Medicare Care nursing home cluster, which now has 50 cases after 15 more were added yesterday. Of the 50 cases, 39 are residents, ten are staff, and one is a household member of a case.
One more case was also linked to the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre cluster which now has 326 cases. Of the 326 cases, 303 are workers at the market, four are trade visitors and 19 are household members of cases.
The other large clusters that grew were at three dormitories, namely:
- Tampines Dormitory – 35 new cases, 216 in total
- Jurong Penjuru Dormitory 2 – six new cases, 107 in total
- Woodlands Dormitory – 11 new cases, 406 in total
In total, the health ministry is closely monitoring five large active clusters.
1,534 COVID-19 Cases in Hospitals; 40 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,534 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
297 severe cases require oxygen supplementation and 40 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of these serious cases, 281 are seniors above the age of 60.
Over the last four weeks, 98.4% of the local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
As of Monday, 83% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.
Year-End Exams Cancelled For Primary 3 & 4 Students
Yesterday, the Ministry of Education announced that the year-end examinations will be cancelled for Primary 3 and 4 students.
This would allow “more time for curriculum recovery due to disruptions brought about by COVID-19,” it explained.
Exams for Primary 5 pupils will go ahead as planned, while there are no year-end exams for Primary 1 and 2 students.
However, Primary 1 to 6 students will be returning to the classroom next week, after around two weeks of home-based learning.
Primary 3 to 6 pupils will return to school for face-to-face classes next Monday (11 Oct), while Primary 1 and 2 students will return to the classroom only next Wednesday (13 Oct).
