Snorkelling is generally a safe activity. It definitely can’t compare to diving or other more dangerous water sports.
However, like any activity, it comes with risks involved.
For a 76-year-old Singaporean man, a seemingly innocent snorkelling activity proved to be fatal.
According to The Straits Times, a 76-year-old Singaporean man, Mr Lim Joo Yong, drowned on Monday, 14 October, at around 3pm while snorkelling off the coast of Malaysia’s Redang Island.
On A Genting Dream Cruise Ship Holiday With Freinds And Family
Reports mentioned that Mr Lim is believed to have been on a six days, five nights trip with his family and friends on Genting Dream Cruise Ship.
The cruise ship left Singapore for Bangkok on Sunday. Two stops were scheduled in between.
If it wasn’t already obvious, Redang Island was one of those stops.
Mr Lim lost consciousness before he was brought to shore. This presumably happened whilst in the water, but this remains unclear.
Lianhe Wanbao reported that Mr Lim was found floating in the water before being brought to shore for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Wanbao had mentioned that a doctor on the island tried to resuscitate Mr Lim for as long as an hour. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain and Mr Lim could not be revived.
Doctor Said That Mr Lim Was Not Wearing A Life Jacket When He Gave CPR
According to Lianhe Wanbao, the doctor had told Wanbao that Mr Lim was not wearing a life jacket while he was giving CPR to him.
However, it is not certain whether he was wearing one while he was snorkelling.
The body was promptly transported to the Kuala Terengganu Hospital on the mainland for an autopsy.
Mr Lim’s friends and family have since been in Kuala Terengganu to bring his body back home to Singapore.
A hospital spokesman told The New Paper that the cause of death was by drowning.
Other Cases Of Drowning
Drowning is an unfortunate way to pass on. Sadly, it happens.
In April 2019, it was reported that a 6-year-old girl drowned at Kallang Swimming Pool while the lifeguard and the mother were busy using their phones.
Just a few weeks ago, a man’s underwater proposal went wrong. While staying in one of the most luxurious rooms on holiday called the “Underwater Room” which costs $2,342 per night, the man had gone underwater outside to propose to his would-be wife. Unfortunately, he drowned.
