8 Facts You Didn’t Know About Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day

Only thing better than ice cream, is free ice cream. And nobody does this better than Ben & Jerry’s, with their annual Free Cone Day, where they give out free scoops of ice cream on either cones or cups, with no strings attached! It’s legit free, proving the adage, “there’s no such thing as a free lunch”, wrong. Well, only if you have ice cream for lunch, of course.

Here are 8 facts about Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day you probably didn’t know.

1. First Ever Free Cone Day

The first ever free cone day was in 1979, and had started as a way to show appreciation to their customers. That was the first year of business in a renovated petrol station in Burlington, Vermont, USA, and Ben & Jerry’s wanted to thank everyone for their support.

2. First Ever Global Free Cone Day

On April 18, the year 2000, shops all over the world celebrated free cone day together for the first time. Presumably, this means it was the first time it was celebrated outside the English-speaking world? We’re not too sure, so you’d just have to take their word for it.

3. First Ever Free Cone Day in SG

The first ever free cone day in Singapore was held on 17 April, 2007. That was a whole 7 years since the first global free cone day, so what’s up with that? We’re not too sure ourselves, but at least we get to enjoy some free ice cream every year now!

4. 2017 Free Cone Day details

This year, Ben & Jerry’s free cone day will be held on 4 April, 2017 in all their scoop shops in Singapore. That’s actually only 3, according to their website: in VivoCity, 313@Somerset, and Dempsey Road. There will also be 3 flavours available, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Strawberry Cheesecake.

5. Queueing Again

Did you know, the moment you get your free scoop of ice cream, you can just join the queue again at the back to get another scoop? Most places will have restrictions on how many free things you can redeem, but not Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day. You can keep queueing for the whole day, if you wanted to!

6. Against Climate Change

Ben & Jerry’s is quite well-known as a socially responsible company, and they have plenty of initiatives to protect the environment, or give back to society. And on their Free Cone Day site, they ask ice cream lovers to sign a petition for action against climate change.

7. Flavour Choice Quiz

When there’s free stuff, the queues are bound to be long. Which means you might only choose to wait for one scoop. So how do you choose from the 3 available flavours? Ben & Jerry’s have got you covered. They have an online quiz to tell you the best flavour for your free cone day scoop, and you can spend the time in queue to do this!

8. Not the Only Time Free Ice Cream was Given Out

This is actually not the only time Ben & Jerry’s gave out free ice cream. Well, it’s the only time you’re going to get some free ice cream, anyway. In the year 1985, Ben & Jerry’s actually donated tons of ice cream to construct the world’s largest sundae, which weighed a whopping 27,102 pounds, or approximately 12,000 kg! That’s 12 tons!

I don’t think anyone would skip on free things, especially when it’s ice cream. So remember to mark down the date, 4th April, on your calendars, and bring your family or friends for a sweet treat on the house!
