When you first heard about China’s freak lift accidents, you were glad that you’re not living in that country.

Media all across the world were gleefully reporting on these incidents and netizens, including us, were just glad.

Not because of their misfortunes, but the fact that we’re staying in Singapore which has stringent rules on safety.

Little did we know what the future holds. Singapore, too, met with a spate of lift accidents which resulted in serious injuries.

Here are 8 facts about the latest one that happened in Jurong West.

1. When and where did the incident happen at?

The incident reportedly happened at Blk 542 Jurong West Ave 1 on Saturday evening, 1 July 2017.

SCDF reported that they received a call at around 9.40pm and sent a Red Rhino, a fire bike and ambulance to the scene. 

2. What happened?

Five people were in the lift when the incident happened, including a ten-year-old girl. They were visiting a relative’s house for Hari Raya Puasa.

They reportedly heard something snap before the lift plunged down four floors, crashing just 1/3 below the ground floor level and got stuck.

3. A man almost lost his leg while another woman tore her ligament

Mr Zulkiffle Saad, one of the five trapped in the lift during the scary experience recalled: he was stepping out from the lift on the fourth floor when they heard the sound.

His brother-in-law reacted fast enough to pull him back into the lift before the lift fell. The lift doors closed and it plummeted down four stories.

A woman in her 30s tore a ligament in her leg when the lift crashed. SCDF confirmed that a woman in her 30s was sent to Ng Teng Fong Hospital.

4. Two men in the lift forced open the lift doors and successfully evacuated everyone from it

There are advisories asking people to remain in the lift when such incidents occur, but the two men in the lift, Mr Zulkiffle and his brother-in-law, decided to pry the door open and get the family out. 

Mr Zulkiffle injured his thumb when he pried the doors open.

5. The reason why they decided that it was important to escape the lift

Raudhah Putri, Mr Zulkiffle’s daughter, spoke up about the incident in a Facebook post. She alleged that they decided to do so because they felt the lift trying to move up after the accident.

They were afraid that the ropes and cables might not be able to hold the weight and crash a second time.

6. There was an accident with the lift before

She also mentioned in her post that before this incident, the lift had a similar accident before. It happened to a group of boys which, fortunately, did not result in any injuries.

7. The faulty lift was highlighted to the Town Council and MP before but nothing was done

Raudhah also claimed that the matter about the lift has been brought up to the Town Council, and even face-to-face with the MP of the area about a year ago.

Despite their efforts, nothing was done about the lift, which resulted in this unfortunate incident.

8. BCA suspended the lift operation “for further investigation”

BCA stated that they have suspended the lift operations for further investigations. Duh, no shit.

They said the Jurong-Clementi Town Council has to appoint an independent professional engineer to investigate the incident and submit a report of findings to them.

The lift can only resume operations after the lift has been rectified to their satisfaction.
