Yishun is transforming into a city of the future, an icon of the North. This is not a joke. Construction has already begun for one of the most ambitious residential/commercial projects in Singapore, Northpoint City.
Here’s what you need to know, so you’ll know exactly what you’re missing out on.
1. Largest Mall in the North
Northpoint City is called a city for a reason. The mall is going to be huge, spanning 1.33 million square feet (combination of both the commercial and residential areas), and there will be over 500 retail and dining outlets, more than doubling the current Northpoint.
2. Integrated Residential Hub
Apart from the 500 outlets, a 12-block residential area is also part of the City, totalling 920 residences. You may have seen it when the train goes past Yishun, called the North Park Residences. This combines residential and commercial areas seamlessly in a large integrated hub (think Jurong Point or Clementi Mall).
3. First Community Club Within a Mall
Nee Soon Central Community Club will be integrated within the City itself, making it the first Community Club within a shopping mall. According to the People’s Association, it will be a transition from a “Void deck CC” into a “Lifestyle CC”. Cool.
4. Transport Options
Multiple transport options will be available, from buses to trains, and even bicycles. There will be an underpass to Yishun MRT, 23 bus services in an air-conditioned bus interchange, sheltered parking for 300 bicycles and over 1,000 car park lots within the City and around.
5. Barrier-free Movement
There will also be new pedestrian bridges with barrier-free access to the entire City, and numerous covered walkways, in addition to the underpass to the MRT station.
6. Future Transport Developments
Northpoint City will also benefit from future developments like the upcoming North-South Expressway and the Thomson Line, slated to complete by 2020, making transport even easier.
7. Huge Town Plaza
There will be a huge town plaza the size of 10 basketball courts, available for use for larger scale events like family carnivals, outdoor concerts and many others. According to HDB, it’s part of an effort to encourage community bonding and transform the estates into a vibrant community.
8. Nature and Suburbia
Northpoint City will have a large rooftop community garden which seamlessly blend nature into the residential and commercial space. The community garden will supplement the existing Town Garden, and contains a multi-purpose plaza for activities such as exercise or picnics.
Northpoint City is expected to complete by 2018. I kinda regret moving away from Yishun now.
