The one thing I love about this island is that it’s riddled with so many hidden places. Some have not been explored a long time, and others are known only to a handful of people. Let’s take a look at 8 hidden gems in Singapore. They’re not only unique to us, but so different from the rest of Singapore. You’d feel as if you travelled to another time and place!

Istana Woodneuk

gem 1 This was one of the biggest private homes that belonged to a Johor Sultan. Sultan Abu Bakar ibni Daing Ibrahim, to be exact. He was fondly called the Father of Modern Johor. While people used to venture in to explore the place, it is no longer possible now as people are barred from entering the area. And when we say barred, we mean arrested for trespassing if you’re caught. Wong Ah Fook constructed this palace for the sultan with western furniture and extravagant ornaments.

Fancy a drink with a kick-ass shot of experience? You’d be able to find it at this bar. It’s an underground cocktail joint with a massive 6k-bulb masterpiece. The team actually took the pains to hang up every single orb. The concoctions here truly push you to the limits of your cocktail drinking. There’s one in particular that’s frightening and challenging, an apple-pie tasting cocktail with champagne yeast. Head to 7 Ann Siang Hill for a drink, and brag about it to your office mates on Monday.

Another unorthodox cocktail spot. You’d actually need a password to get past its doors. Thank God for Google, and online access to the secret phrase. Each cocktail here has its own story to go with it, and is carefully concocted by Nicholas Quattroville. He heads the team here.

You won’t get your usual cinema experience here. In fact, it’s a far shout from it. The owners aim to bring back that old school feeling when you view movies. And you get to pick your movie genre and film–indie, foreign, classics and even cult favourites are available here. Take a cab from the nearest MRT to the Golden Mile Tower.

Try out the yakitori at a spot that was once a kopitiam. A 70-year old coffee shop, to be exact. The yakitori bar is headed by Chef Asai Masashi. Try out a plate of his offering for the day with a selection from the Japanese whisky or sake list. You’ll be hooked!

This abandoned reservoir is now listed in the National Heritage board. You’d find this place at Telok Blangah Road. Take a hike around the place a discover its concrete steps and imagine diving into the pool as you stand close to its ancient diving board.

A hike around this place is going to give you a feel of how it was having the Brits in the country during WW2. You get to explore the former naval base and tunnels, and HUGE gigantic pipes.

The Great Escape

No, this is no Gwen Stefani song. It’s in fact a rooftop bar with a movie screen and the mesmerizing view of the Marina Bay skies. Its location? The Golden Mile Towers on Beach Road. No, I’m not kidding. But seriously, check it out. And all the other 7 spots too. You’ll see Singapore from a whole different perspective.
