Once upon a time, I wrote an article saying that smoking is like rubbing poop at people’s faces, except it’s worst than poop because it kills them and smells at the same time.

Well, some people didn’t find it funny, but I stand my ground.

With a survey to back me up this time.

A Survey by Smoking Cabin SG with 958 respondents

Just in case you think I’m pulling this survey out of my ass to protect my reputation previously, this is a survey done by Smoking Cabin SG, the guys who brought you uh, smoking cabins.

The survey was conducted with 641 non-smokers and 317 smokers, with a majority of the respondents aged 21 – 40. Considering that I’m pretty sure smokers in S’pore aren’t just 30%, don’t say there’s no representation hor.

These people were selected from visitors to the Smoking Cabin, and random people approached by Smoking Cabin staff on the streets. They do the survey through a Google Form.

Do they have a bias in the survey? Well, yes they do. Not only because of anti-smoking in public agenda, but their smoking cabins also charge a S$2,500 monthly fee to shopping mall operators and building owners for a minimum period of 5 years.

Inside the cabins are also advertising spaces.

So not only is the cabin a box, but it is also an ad pop-up box. But hey, let’s look further into the results.

87% non-smokers bothered by and 79% smokers felt families and friends bothered by second-hand smoke

On second-hand smoke:

  • 87% of non-smokers bothered by second-hand smoke
  • 79% of smokers felt that families and friends were bothered by second-hand smoke

In the survey, it is also revealed that 91% of non-smokers prefer family and friends not to smoke around them.

Good reception to smoking cabins

80.8% of non-smokers said that having less second-hand smoke due to a Smoking Cabin would positively influence their decision to visit a shopping mall.

Of course, I have no idea how they actually did the survey, but 93% of smokers said they hope to see more smoking cabins in Singapore.

The Orchard Road Smoking ban is probably the reason why they are so receptive. Or who knows why. (Blink twice if you’re being held hostage.)

For all we know, those might be replies of people driven by society to a corner, forced to live a life not of their own choosing…

Either way.

Smoking brings inconvenience to non-smokers in different ways feat. Redditor

My stance on personal decisions to do anything is that as long as you don’t cause harm or inconvenience to other people, feel free to do whatever you want.

Second-hand smoking? Ticks the box for smell (inconvenience) and cancer (harm).

But oftentimes, smoking also brings inconvenience in different ways. For instance, here’s a story I saw on Reddit by redditor u/buckyhussain, in dealing with a smoking neighbour:

Mine is above, so their cigarette butts fall into my balcony.

  • First, I tahan for a good few weeks
  • Then I put a nicely worded note at their door (pls stop smoking my infant son is coughing a lot)
  • recently i collected a few week’s worth of cigarette butts, stuffed in his mailbox. enjoy.

no more cigarette butts since then.

So yeah, even if you don’t personally feel the inconvenience, other people can. It’s like my decision to go shirtless in the mall pretending to be an attractive muscleman, but the people look in my direction and go ugh.

At least I got to enjoy the aircon more that day.
