HYROX Athlete Has Bowel Accident Mid-Race, Continues Competing; Organiser Disinfects Course

A female athlete continued competing at HYROX Beijing despite experiencing a bowel accident during her race on Saturday, 12 September, prompting concerns about hygiene on the shared course.

Photos and videos from the event showed the athlete continuing with parts of the competition, including burpee broad jumps, after the incident.

Chinese outlet Cover News reported that she went on to complete the race and achieved a strong placing. However, an official result confirming claims circulating online that she won the race could not be independently verified at the time of writing.

HYROX China later issued an official statement addressing what it described as concerns over hygiene at the Beijing venue.

Organiser Says Affected Areas Were Isolated And Disinfected

In its statement posted at 9.27pm on 12 September, HYROX China said organisers isolated the affected parts of the competition area and course after the incident.

It said comprehensive disinfection was carried out and continued until racing ended for the day.

Affected equipment was also removed from use, while waste was disposed of according to local waste-management requirements.

HYROX said the carpet would be replaced after the event concluded, followed by a deeper disinfection of the venue.

The incident attracted discussion online because HYROX athletes share workout stations and parts of the race course. Some questioned whether the competitor should have been allowed to continue after the accident.

HYROX’s own athlete guidance says participants can withdraw at any time if they feel unable to continue. Staff are stationed around the course and at workout stations to call medical personnel when assistance is needed.

The organiser did not announce any penalty for the athlete in its public statement.

HYROX Beijing Runs From 10 To 13 September

The Beijing event is being held at the National Speed Skating Oval from 10 to 13 September.

Saturday’s programme included the HYROX Pro Women’s competition, along with men’s, mixed doubles and relay events.

HYROX races use a standard format in which competitors alternate eight 1km runs with eight functional workout stations. These include exercises such as the SkiErg, sled push and pull, rowing, burpee broad jumps, farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls.

That structure also means competitors repeatedly move through common workout areas and use shared equipment, which explains why the bowel accident quickly became a hygiene issue rather than merely an embarrassing moment for one athlete.

HYROX Beijing was scheduled to continue on Sunday, 13 September, with women’s, doubles and mixed relay competitions.
