Health Minister Ong Ye Kung shared a video of himself learning Cantonese opera alongside seniors on 1 November 2026, encouraging older people to keep picking up new interests.
Learning Alongside Seniors
8world reported that the Facebook video showed Ong joining seniors at an active ageing centre. Under a teacher’s guidance, they sang the classic Cantonese opera piece You Long Xi Feng (《游龙戏凤》).
Ong also asked participants what drew them to the art form. One described it as beautiful and enjoyable, explaining that they could now learn from a teacher after previously only listening.
The instructor hoped more seniors would visit active ageing centres and develop new interests.
Never Too Late to Start
Ong encouraged seniors to try learning a language, song or dance, saying learning could help them feel younger.
His post encouraged them to try unfamiliar activities at any age.
Active ageing centres offer opportunities to explore interests, meet other seniors and volunteer, according to the Agency for Integrated Care. They serve Singapore citizens and permanent residents aged 60 and above, regardless of housing type or income.
