Singapore will lose its only non-stop air link to Canada in January 2027, less than three years after Air Canada launched direct flights between Singapore and Vancouver.
The Canadian flag carrier confirmed that its Singapore-Vancouver service will be suspended from 26 January 2027.
Air Canada cited commercial considerations, including demand, the cost of operating such a long flight and current fuel prices.
Route Did Not Meet Air Canada’s Business Targets
An Air Canada spokeswoman told The Straits Times that the airline and its partners had invested significant resources in the route for close to three years.
However, the service did not meet the business targets needed for it to remain commercially sustainable.
The nearly 12,818km journey is Air Canada’s longest route by distance.
The airline currently operates the service up to five times a week using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
According to Air Canada, the economics of an ultra-long-haul flight are particularly challenging because the aircraft needs to carry additional fuel for the lengthy journey. That extra fuel itself adds weight, which increases fuel consumption.
Together with demand and current fuel costs, Air Canada said these factors led it to redeploy its aircraft to markets where the economics are more favourable.
The Singapore-to-Vancouver flight takes roughly 14 hours, while the journey in the opposite direction can take about 16 hours and 45 minutes.
Direct Flights Started in April 2024
Air Canada launched the route in April 2024.
At the time, the airline described it as the only non-stop service between Canada and Singapore and positioned Vancouver as a convenient connection point for passengers travelling onwards across North America.
The service initially operated four times a week throughout the year.
Its launch came about six months after Singapore Airlines ended its own Singapore-Vancouver service following a review of its network.
That meant Air Canada effectively restored a direct Singapore-Canada connection when its flights began in 2024.
From 26 January 2027, that non-stop option will disappear again.
Air Canada Will Still Sell Connections From Singapore
The suspension does not mean Air Canada will disappear entirely from the Singapore market.
The airline said it will continue serving passengers here through codeshare partnerships with other Star Alliance airlines.
A codeshare allows one airline to sell seats on a flight actually operated by another carrier under its own flight number.
Air Canada currently places its code on Singapore Airlines flights from Singapore to hubs including Tokyo Narita, Seoul Incheon, Hong Kong, London Heathrow, Frankfurt and Brussels.
It also codeshares on ANA services to Tokyo, where passengers can connect to Air Canada-operated flights.
In practical terms, Singapore travellers heading to Canada after the non-stop service ends will therefore need to make at least one stop along the way.
