A 24-year-old Singaporean Muay Thai fighter has died after being taken to hospital following a tournament at the National Stadium earlier this month.
Police confirmed his death on Monday, 28 September, after he had previously been reported to be in critical condition following the AMC 13 – Fight for Hope tournament on 12 September.
Preliminary police investigations do not suggest foul play. Investigations are still ongoing.
Fighter Was Taken Unconscious to Hospital
According to the police, a report was lodged at about 8am on 13 September involving the 24-year-old, who had participated in the tournament the previous day.
He had been taken unconscious to hospital after the event. Police subsequently confirmed that he died, although they did not disclose when his death occurred.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force had earlier said it received a call for assistance at 1 Stadium Drive at about 7.05pm on 12 September. One person was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The Straits Times previously reported on 18 September that the fighter was in critical condition and receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
Bout Was Stopped in Third Round
Singapore Muaythai Association president Mike Tang previously told The Straits Times that the bout was stopped by the referee during the third round for the fighter’s safety.
Tang also disputed reports that a knockout had occurred in the ring. He said both competitors remained for the result announcement and were able to leave the ring without assistance. One of them later needed medical attention and was attended to by the medical team at the venue before being taken to hospital.
The Singapore Muaythai Association said earlier that it had begun a formal review and was working with the relevant parties to establish what happened.
The association’s official website describes AMC 13 – Fight for Hope as part of a Muay Thai festival at the National Stadium. The event was held on 12 September and included amateur competition.
Fight for Hope was organised in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation, with fundraising and awareness activities forming part of the event.
Police investigations remain ongoing.
