Woman, 62, Dies in Defu Trailer Accident; Driver Allegedly Leaves Scene Before Being Arrested

A 62-year-old woman died after an accident involving her bicycle and a trailer in the Defu industrial area on Thursday morning, 1 October.

Police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force were alerted to the accident at the junction of Defu Avenue 1 and Defu Lane 7 at about 10.10am.

The woman, who was riding a bicycle, was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.

Trailer Driver Allegedly Left Before Police Arrived

According to police, the 43-year-old trailer driver had left the accident scene before officers arrived.

He was later arrested for careless driving causing death.

Police investigations are ongoing.

In Singapore, “careless driving causing death” refers to a serious road traffic offence involving driving without due care or reasonable consideration, where death results from the accident. At this stage, the driver has been arrested, and no finding of guilt has been reported.

Accident Happened in an Industrial Area

The accident happened at the junction of Defu Avenue 1 and Defu Lane 7, an area used by industrial traffic, including heavy vehicles.

Footage and images of the aftermath circulated online showed the area cordoned off by the authorities. A bicycle could be seen on the road, while police tape and cones were placed around the accident scene.

Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported that the cyclist may have been dragged for a distance, but the more graphic eyewitness descriptions have been omitted here.

Road Accidents Rose in First Half of 2026

The accident comes after Traffic Police figures showed that road traffic accidents resulting in injuries rose in the first half of 2026.

According to mid-year road statistics released on 28 August, injury accidents increased from 3,748 in the first half of 2025 to 3,869 in the same period in 2026. The number of people injured also rose from 4,894 to 5,090.

However, fatalities fell from 79 in the first half of 2025 to 61 in the first half of 2026, while fatal accidents dropped from 78 to 60.
