Nine Indoor Pickleball and Padel Courts Planned Beside Newton MRT

An empty plot beside Newton MRT station is set to become an air-conditioned sports venue with five pickleball courts and four padel courts.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the project, called TSA @ Newton, took place on Saturday (7 November). The roughly 1,400 sq m venue is expected to open in late March or early in the second quarter of 2027.

Padel is a racket sport played on an enclosed court. Players can use the walls to keep a rally going.

Moulmein-Cairnhill Residents to Get Priority Booking

The courts are intended for public use, with priority booking and discounted rates for residents of Moulmein-Cairnhill.

Alvin Tan, the area’s MP, said at the groundbreaking that the venue was part of a wider effort to bring sports back to the Farrer Park area.

One resident who plays pickleball six times a week told Lianhe Zaobao that he often drives about 40 minutes to play at Singapore Expo or around Jalan Kayu. He expects to be able to walk to the new courts in five to 10 minutes.

A Sports Venue on Vacant Land Beside the Station

The Land Transport Authority, SBS Transit and private operator The Sports Arina are working together on the project. SBS Transit leases the plot and runs the Downtown Line, which connects with the North-South Line at Newton.

SBS Transit group chief executive Jeffrey Sim told Lianhe Zaobao that the company wants to give people a reason to visit station areas beyond catching a train. SBS Transit sees the Newton venue as a step towards creating a sports hub around the station.
