When I was young, just like many other kids, I thought cigarettes were cool.

I would hold the kumquat candy sticks between my index and middle finger and start “smoking”. Then my mother would slap me and ask if “my brain wire run” (An Asian mum way of asking if I have gone crazy).

If you don’t know how a kumquat candy sticks look like:

Granted, it definitely does not look like cigarettes. But in my defence, that was the closest I could have gotten as a kid.

Then as I grew older, my friends started vaping. They said it was healthier, less to zero nicotine.

Noticed the past tense I used there?

Lung Damages As A Result Of Vaping

If you haven’t been watching or reading the news, you should probably start doing it.

But on a serious note, many news media has been reporting on how vaping is now suspected to have cause “mysterious lung illness” where a large number of vapers has been hospitalized due to lung damage, some of which are in intensive care and ventilators.

More Than 100 Cases, 1 Death So Far

According to NBCNews, there are 149 cases across 15 states which includes California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin.

However, that was two weeks ago.

Just a few days back, Buzz Feed News has reported that the outbreak has spread across 22 states, and the number of cases has increased to nearly 200.

If that still doesn’t worry you, it was also reported that a patient who was suffering from vape-related lung damage has just passed on.

Outbreak Is A Mystery

While it was suspected that the outbreak was vape related, there is still no solid evidence stating that vape is the culprit.

However, most of the patients are reported to have vape oils containing THC, marijuana ingredients that make you high before they experienced symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath etc.

Spread The Words

If you are thinking “Aiya, also not in Singapore.”, maybe you should bang your head against the wall. #justkidding

I don’t know about you, but I have definitely noticed an increasing number of youngsters holding that USB-looking thing near their mouth and start puffing smoke out.

So, the next time you see someone does that thing shown in the picture, show them this article to warn them of the negative effect vaping might have.

As Jay Chou always say, listen to your mum. If your mum asks you not to smoke, just don’t. Not even vape.
