In a multicultural country like Singapore, acceptance is key to the smooth running of society.
If we can’t put our differences aside, how are we going to get anything done?
To do this, we have to be sensitive to other cultures, beliefs, and traditions, because incidents of intolerance will only lead to hate and division.

But avoiding this is much easier said than done.
Academy Disallows Tudung During Cooking Course, Woman Claims She’s Not Been Told
A social media user has taken to Facebook to vent her frustrations about an unsavoury experience she had at a culinary school after she registered for a cooking course.
The woman shared her post on the Facebook group Complaint Singapore last Saturday (26 Sep).
She claimed to have applied for the “Traditional Malay Hawker Fare” course at At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy in person.
However, after paying the course fee and completing the registration, she made a perplexing discovery.
In their guidelines, the culinary academy stated it prohibits all kinds of “headgears”, as part of their “grooming policy”.
This upset the woman, as it meant she would not be able to wear her tudung.
It also confused her, as she had been wearing a tudung at the academy when registering for the course in person, but was not informed of the school’s guidelines with regard to headgear.

Confused by this guideline, the woman wondered why the school prohibits headgear, even religious ones.
So, what was the school’s reason for the prohibition?
“Safety & Operational Reasons”
Speaking to MS News, a student services executive confirmed that the school does not permit headgear, including religious headgear, in the kitchen during a course.
Headgear, under the academy’s definition, would include baseball caps, scarves, and bandanas.
Students are only allowed to wear chef hats and hairnets.

But why?
The executive told MS News that the headgear prohibition is for “safety and operational reasons”.
“Operationally, kitchens have high temperatures and are very hot. There are industrial equipment, like ovens, that are being used.”
Thus, while there is an open flame in the kitchen, headgear like a tudung could catch fire.
The executive added that this prohibition was added to their guidelines after conducting research and consulting friends in the F&B industry.

They insist that all staff members have been told to inform applicants of the attire rules in person or over the phone.
Applicants will also receive an email which includes the list of guidelines for the course.
Offered Woman Cap For Course
In a comment on the post, the woman also claimed that At-Sunrice offered her a cap for the course so she didn’t have to give it up.
But the woman declined, as she had already received a refund for the course fee.
Nonetheless, the academy said it plans to reach out the aggrieved woman, to “understand more about her experience”.
They will also do a service recovery if they find her allegations are true.
