Meme Pages are fun to spend your time on, and they’re usually harmless. But you probably didn’t know that Internet memes have more repercussion on society than you imagine; here, watch this video we’ve done about memes and you’ll understand at the end of the video (also, please subscribe to our YouTube channel for more informative videos!):

Recently, a meme page has got under fire and it’s not because social justice warriors have put them in their crosshairs; instead, it’s about an image that went viral for all the wrong reasons.

Diaozui Hotline Memes FB Page Apologises After It Made Fun of Family in MRT; Said They Thought It Was ‘Harmless’

Facebook meme page Diaozui Hotline Memes posted these images yesterday (28 September) without much context, but the connotation is clear: four of them appear to be in a promiscuous relationship…in public.

But anyone who’s been in the Internet would know there’s more to it, and before 24 hours could pass, the people in the image has seen it and replied to the allegations that weren’t explicitly made.

Misleading Image

For a start, this isn’t the full picture. Like, literally.

The woman in white has come forward to explain the image, and it turns out that there should’ve been one more person to the right of the image.

The guy she rested her head on is her father, and the guy who shared the earphones with her is her brother.

Here’s what she’s written:

First of all I’m the girl in white. The one I’m sharing my earpiece with is my bro. The one I’m lying down on is my dad. May I know what’s wrong with sharing music with my bro and also fall asleep on my dad’s shoulder?? Why is my mother being cropped out of the photo? You come from a family that doesn’t love you and share things with you that’s why you felt this is complicated to you?

The lady in green has also responded and explained why they had to share a pair of wired earphones that only dinosaurs use:

First of all, I’m the one in green shirt and my bf in black shirt. The girl beside my bf is his blood sister and the guy she lean on to is their father, no idea why the person who took this pic crop their mom out. FYI, my AirPod got no batt, that’s why my bf share earpiece with his sister.

And finally, the guy has also commented with a short and sweet response:

First of all I’m the guy in black, I got a great gf, a pretty sister and loving family. Story of my life. Nothing much to explain.

So far, the person who’s most likely to use Facebook, the First-of-All Dad, hasn’t commented, and even if he intends to do so, he can’t do it now because the image has been deleted.

The Facebook Page posted this after they knew the story behind the image:

There's a photo circulating around of a girl sharing her earphones with another guy. We had originally posted it before…

Lest you can’t read:

There’s a photo circulating around of a girl sharing her earphones with another guy. We had originally posted it before it made its rounds on social media and we want to apologize to the subjects in the photo if it has caused any distress. We received the photo through an anonymous submission with censored faces so we thought it was harmless at first. After the subject messaged us over Messenger, we decided that we cannot in good conscience leave the post up and decided to take it down. I guess there was no real need to write this post, but we felt it was only due for us to use our influence to clear any misunderstandings and to take responsibility for our oversight. The subjects in the photo are family members, please stop with the denigrating comments and respect their desire to be out of the spotlight. Once again, we really apologize.

Another meme page, Tiagong, posted this 2 hours before the apology and it got over 2.6k Shares in less than 24 hours:

And now we wonder if we’d see any meme page wars.
