In 1993, Brandon Lee – the son of martial-arts icon Bruce Lee – was shot and killed by a prop gun by his co-actor while filming a movie called The Crow.

9 years earlier, American actor Jon-Erik Hexum died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the set of a television series after he toyed with a prop gun believed to contain blanks.

Contrary to what many of us believe, prop guns used in TV shows and movies aren’t always fake or toy guns. They can be real, fully functional weapons.

And if improperly handled, such props can be very dangerous.

Actor Alec Baldwin Killed Woman With a Prop Gun During Filming

A prop gun fired by American actor Alec Baldin ended up killing a cinematographer and wounding a director on a film set.

The tragic incident occurred in the US state of New Mexico, where they were filming the movie Rust.

Unbeknownst to the actor, the prop firearm which was shot at Halyna Hutchins, 42, and Joel Souza, 48, contained live rounds. Hutchins was shot in the chest, and Souza, who was standing behind her, was wounded as well.

Hutchins, the cinematographer, was transported to hospital by helicopter but succumbed to her injuries. Souza was conveyed to a hospital by ambulance and is receiving treatment.

No charges have been filed over the incident, and investigations are underway.

What Happened?

According to Koco Newsthere were three prop guns on a cart near where the crew was shooting.

An assistant director picked one up and, assuming it contained blanks, handed it to Baldwin. Blanks contain only the gunpowder to mimic the sound of a discharged round.

He then said, “Cold gun,” which indicated that the gun contained no live rounds.

Unfortunately, he was wrong in this instance. Baldwin fired the gun, and only then did the crew realise that the gun had not been prepared properly.

A call to 911 was made soon after, with the caller saying someone had been shot.

Baldwin’s Response

A day later, Baldwin broke his silence and expressed his condolences for Hutchins’ family.

“There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours,” he wrote.

“…I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna,” he said.

Pictures of a distraught Baldwin, reportedly after the tragic accident, were shared on social media.
