The news never fails to amaze us, and here’s another story that’s just going to give you that OMG look on your face.
A few days back (30 Oct), a fitness coach here was fined a sum of S$4,000.
Her crime? The former national athlete Poon Pek Ya caused harm to a motorcyclist as he was cycling negligently.
She plead guilty of the crime.
Poon is not a person who’s unknown either, as he is known to train people in fitness using a variety of sports-linked workouts – this includes the very act she got charged for: cycling.
In the incident, Poon was cycling her bike around Changi Coast Road at about 7.30 in the morning. She chose to then cycle right across three lanes and THEN make a stop –smack at the divider in the middle.
The motorcyclist who got hurt, Mr Syed Mohammed Atheer Ahmad Reda Shahab was just going on his way and riding his bike in the middle lane of the road at precisely the same time.
As he had to avoid Poon, Syed had no choice but to make a swerve to the right, and he lost his balance and fell in the process. When he dropped to the ground, Syed heard the sound of a crack which came from his leg.
The medical report from his injury showed that Syed had suffered with a fracture on his right shin. He had to be placed on hospitalization leave for three months – from March 5 right up to Aug 7 in 2016.
During the sentencing, the judge for the case, District Judge John Ng said he considered the offence a poor misjudgement on her part. Poon could have otherwise been sentenced to a jail term of no more than 2 years, and fined a sum of up to S$5,000.
Her defense lawyers did state that in her years of being a fitness coach, none of her students nor her had been involved in a cycling accident of any kind. This was her first mishap.
Poon, a 48-year old, was the brains behind the fitness company called Unpossible back in 2013. Based on the information on her website, she has gained a good number of awards for her work in the sporting activity arena.
She even took the second place in the Port Dickson International Triathlon in 2013, and was the champion for 2001’s Al Formosa International Triathlon too!
Apart from this incident and another parking offence that took place some 12 years ago, Poon’s records were pretty much clear.
We’d like to reiterate that from now on, if any of you would like to stay fit on the road, do take note of the rules that apply.
It’s really not nice to see an innocent bystander get hurt simply because of a silly mistake you did while cycling or running across the road to get your six-pack or killer legs now, is it not?
