Anchorvale Resident Almost Fought with Contractor Renovating Upstairs Unit Due to Noise

We know how annoying construction noises can be and the hair-pulling frustration of having to tolerate the drilling and hammering noises.

But is your patience good enough to sit through the noise, or will you break and unleash your fury?

Driving Her Up the Wall

Worried for her five-month-old daughter, 36-year-old Ms Lim, living in Anchorvale, Block 351A in Sengkang, decided to take matters into her hands regarding the insufferable renovations that were taking place upstairs.

The housewife pointed out that the renovation work had started last month.

She stated that since 14 April, she had received four prior notices from contractors informing her that hacking work would be carried out.

The problem was that every time the drilling started, there would be tremendous noises from morning till afternoon, with the workers above using an electric drill while pounding and demolishing at the same time.

The intensity was so bad that items around the house would vibrate as well.

Judging from the picture of how bare and raw the place looks, we can imagine the amount of renovation work to be done. And, of course, the noise.

Her tolerance for the noise was worsened when on five occasions, no notice was issued prior to construction work. Instead, only a notification was pasted on the wall on the ground floor informing residents of the demolition.

Enough is Enough

Her last straw was when the workers still came down on weekends and public holidays, days that were off-limits for renovations due to rules implemented by the Housing Development Board (HDB).

In a feat of anger, she went upstairs to confront the contractor. Things got really heated when she nearly got into a physical altercation with the contractor, and the police had to be called in to intervene.

Talking to Shin Min Daily, she made it clear that it was not the general renovation noises she had a problem with, but more specifically, it was the extremely loud and long period of drilling.

She worried that the noise pollution of the intense drilling upstairs could have damaged her five-month-old daughter’s eardrums. For assurance, she decided to bring her daughter for a medical checkup, just in case.

No updates have been shared on the condition of the baby’s hearing, but realistically, her concerns are well-founded, though admittedly, the near-physical altercation was not needed.

But hey, don’t test what a mother is willing to do for her child, alright?Â
