If you think you’ve heard the last of them, well you haven’t!

What exactly? The whole PMD episode turned saga turned franchise. The soon to be empire, the replacement of the entire StarWars chain, and the ruler of all galaxies.

Indeed, we bid a bittersweet goodbye to the best of the decade only to say the most reluctant of, “I guess I’ll see more of PMDs in 2020!”

In case you didn’t know yet, PMDs are now banned in footpath. Just watch this video lest you’ve really been living under the rock for more than a month:

So what happened this time around? Yet another PMD related incident. Only this time, there’s fire involved. No casualties, just fire.

A PMD that was charging along the corridors of a HDB block in Clementi had caught fire. The cause of the fire is assumed to have started from an electrical malfunction in the charging device.

Three Residents Were Evacuated

An article from The Straits Times reported that the following incident had taken place on 5 December along the corridors Block 715 in Clementi Street 2.

A Facebook Post by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) explained that the fire had broken out at about 12.45 pm.

Three of the unit’s occupants were evacuated from the scene. To everybody’s relief, the incident left no recorded injuries.

As mentioned in the post, it only took one water jet to extinguish the fire.

Unfortunately, the damage caused by the fire remains to be quite a load. The post was accompanied by images of the blackened exterior of the corridor’s walls.

Burnt loose wiring are seen hanging along the area. There are also unrecognisable remnants of the occupants’ belongings.

A Reminder To The Public

The case isn’t the first of its kind. Over the months, various reports of the similar nature have surfaced.

According to The Straits Times, 49 PMD-related fire incidents were reported in just the first half of this year!

In light of this widespread issue, The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has sought to encourage the public to purchase only UL2272-certified devices. Users who own mobility devices that are not covered by the certification are strongly encouraged to dispose the devices.

UL2272-certified devices are equipped with electrical systems that are better at withstanding…your bad charging habits. It poses less of a fire hazard.
