Anytime Fitness Bugis User Made 2 Viral TikTok Videos
Gymming can be a cathartic experience for many, as they pump and pull the day’s stresses away.
Most gym enthusiasts can attest to the fact that this is a fairly straightforward process—enter, work out, repeat, and go home feeling sore from that unmissable leg day.
However, for one user on TikTok, the simple act of entering the gym resulted in him receiving a $60 fine and potentially being banned from this 24-hour gym.
Anytime Fitness Bugis Customer Received “Shocking” and “Harsh” Message After Gym Session
In a now-viral video posted on 29 August 2023, user alaness posted screenshots of his exchange with Anytime Fitness Bugis, in which he expressed his shock and disbelief at being charged S$60 because he did not ensure a door was closed behind him.
This reportedly resulted in “an unidentified person coming in without tapping her key fob”.
The gym acknowledged that while this might not have been intentional on the user’s part, it was a matter they took seriously and have reminded all members that it was their “sole responsibility to ensure that the door is closed behind [them].”
In the exchange that followed, the gym user said he felt that “the punishment was very harsh and [rushed]” especially since, according to him, he always ensures that he closes the door behind him.
His frustration could be felt through a brick wall, as he expressed how he thought this penalty was unfair.
He even questioned the gym’s point of view, stating, “She was just behind me. So you want me to push her out and close the door on her and tell her please tap yourself before entering?”
Clearly still indignant about the situation unfolding, the gym user told the gym that he would be coming down to check the CCTV footage in an attempt to “clarify and appeal” his case.
But the gym was as ready as Taylor Swift was with the receipts, screenshotting moments in which a woman was seen entering the gym behind the user.
In this, they emphasized that “it would have been ideal if [the user] had urged her to exit and tap the key fob before coming in behind [him],” stating that they always explain this policy to members during the sign-up process.
Anytime Fitness Bugis Was Insistent Despite The User’s Appeals
Even after heading down and reviewing the CCTV footage provided, the user stood his ground, stating that he did not notice the woman entering behind him.
I guess the gym trained not only his biceps but also his resolve.
Here’s a gif showing how the woman tailgated into the gym:
The CCTV footage shows that a woman did indeed follow him into the gym and start working out on her own. The gym purportedly insisted that it was the user’s responsibility to ensure that the door was closed to prevent this from happening.
They added that this was written in the terms and conditions provided during the signup process.
Reading The Fine Print
In a second video uploaded by the user on this incident, he went back to read the Membership Policies that the gym kept reminding him about.
A clause stated: “You must not allow anyone else to use your key fob and must alert the Club immediately if it is lost or stolen. If this policy is violated, you may be charged a guest fee and/or have your membership suspended or canceled subject to a cancellation fee.”
In this, the user was adamant that this did not apply to him since he did not “allow” the girl to use his key fob.
However, he continued on to read the Letter of Acceptance, which states that users may be “charged a guest fee (currently $30) every time someone else enters the Club using [their] key fob.”
Needless to say, that $30 was half the price of what this user was charged, and he questioned the inconsistency of this “user fee”.
On the gym’s website, the FAQ available to the public does not mention any details outlined in what is given to its members.
He paid the $60 as he was going to travel soon, and would not be able to meet the deadline before he would be banned.
Public Backlash Against Anytime Fitness Bugis
These two TikTok videos have garnered a total of over 700K views, and a majority of the commenters are siding with the user.
Many feel that the tailgating should not be pinned on user alaness and that he was unaware of this situation.
Even former staff members are coming out of the woodwork to say that they feel the gym is taking advantage of the situation to make the user pay.
Anytime Fitness Has Since Apologized The beef between the two finally came to an end when the outlet posted an Instagram Story, saying that after review, the interpretation of the incident was “erroneous”, and it was a mistake. They also refunded the $60 to the member.
Here’s their statement in full:
The management of AF Bugis was made aware of an issue that was highlighted by members of the public about the enforcement of tailgating policies.
