Unscrupulous individuals looking to fleece money off unsuspecting individuals have been on the rise recently.

Previously, a 61-year-old retiree had almost $50,000 taken from his account and landed in a $100,000 debt to UOB.

He is currently being sued by the bank for refusing to pay back the amount.

Well, now, another bank incident has hit the news.

Boon Lay Place ATM Closed After Someone’s Card Was Used in Gaming Website

On 19 Nov 2020, a lady in Singapore took to Facebook to share her POSB ATM experience.

According to her Facebook post, she had allegedly used one of the POSB ATM machines located at Boon Lay Place near the market and food centre.

While the machine took longer than usual to dispense her money, she thought it was a case of the machine “hanging” and took no notice of it.

Her money was eventually dispensed to her.

However, it was at night on the same day that something strange happened.

She was notified that her bank card was blocked due to “suspicious activities”.

When she checked, she realised that her card had made multiple failed transactions to a gaming website.

Thankfully, no money was taken from her although she warned others from using the machine with the ID 8062 because that particular machine might’ve been compromised.

POSB’s Response

After her social media post, POSB got in touch with the lady via their Facebook account.

Confirming that she has reported the issue to their contact centre, they asked if she could get in touch with them via email for a follow up on the incident.

It was added that they are relieved that “no fraudulent transactions went though” although they want to investigate this further.

Well, turns out, it might’ve been a fruitful incident since the next moment, another Facebook user showed what allegedly happened to the ATM machines in question.

They have allegedly been cordoned off from use.

Keep An Eye On Your Transactions

Internet banking and other technological advances have made every day more convenient for the users but it comes as a trade-off: security.

One good way to ensure security is to make things a tad bit more inconvenient for yourself.

No auto-sign-ins, no “remember me” so you’re always required to put in your OTP, making sure that alerts to your transactions (through SMS) are always switched on is a pretty good place to start.

Do also note that whether the ATM is hacked or not is not confirmed yet either.

But at least this time, unlike the UOB incident, the bank managed to flag suspicious transactions and take action at the first possible moment.
