On 22 Sep this year, a rather puzzling video was posted on YouTube.
Shared by SG Road Vigilante, it showed footage of what appeared to be the aftermath of an accident.
Shortly after an alleged accident takes place, a yellow Honda Fit stops in front of the accident site, and a group of four men rushes out from the car. They approach a man who appears to be the driver involved in the accident.
Minutes later, a black Audi stops along the slip road on the expressway as well, and two other men from the vehicle join the large group gathered at the accident site.
The six men then talk amongst themselves, as well as to the drivers involved in the accident. At the time, no one knew why the two cars had stopped and rushed to the scene of the accident.
Were they concerned, good samaritans who just wanted to help? Well, not quite.
8 Men from the Infamous Black Audi & Yellow Fit Investigated for Dangerous Driving, Harassment & Touting
The police said they’re investigating eight men for dangerous driving, harassment, and touting depicted on videos shared on social media.
The videos featured a black Audi A5 and a yellow Honda Fit, it added.
The four men from the Honda Fit are now being investigated for allegedly harassing a male driver involved in the accident.
Yes, harassing, not helping.
The two men who emerged from the Audi are also being investigated for their suspected involvement in touting for business, which is an offence under the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act.
Why Did They Stop?
According to the captions which accompanied SG Road Vigilante’s video, the men who allegedly harassed the drivers involved in the accident were “errant claims specialists”.
This claim was echoed by commenters who had experienced something similar.
One netizen said that these men are part of “car repair workhop syndicates” that drive around expressways looking for road accidents.
When they spot an accident, they will rush towards the site and offer to repair the damages and even assist with filing insurance claims.
In the end, however, they’d inflate the cost of repairs and charge extortionate amounts to the poor drivers who fall for the ruse.
Other Offences
The video also showed two other incidents for which the men are now being investigated.
In one incident, the same yellow Fit can be seen repeatedly and abruptly braking along New Upper Changi Road, which eventually led to a bus hitting it from behind.
The driver of the Fit has since been arrested for dangerous driving and his driving licence was suspended.
In the other incident, the Black Audi could be seen weaving in and out of traffic, and was involved in a chain collision with four other vehicles as well.
According to the police, the 25-year-old male driver had allegedly stopped behind other vehicles that were involved in a separate accident to solicit for business when his vehicle was hit from behind by another car.
The man has since been arrested for dangerous driving and is also being investigated for separate offences of dangerous driving captured in separate social media videos.
His licence was also suspended.
If there’s anything to learn from this crazy tale, it’s that not all good samaritans have good intentions. You have to always be wary of scams, whether online or on the road.
Sadly, that’s the world we live in now.
