Myanmar’s Former Leader Aung San Suu Kyi Sentenced to 4 Years’ Jail

The last time we heard about Aung San Suu Kyi, she was arrested and detained by the military coup with limited communication with the outside world.

Today, it’s revealed that she has been sentenced to four years in jail and that is not her final verdict.

Leader Aung San Suu Kyi Sentenced to 4 Years Jail

This afternoon, a spokesman for the military group that overthrew the civilian Government said that Myanmar ousted civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was sentenced to four years in jail.

Of the four years, she has been sentenced to two years on the charge of incitement against the military and two years for breaking COVID-19 rules.

These are the first verdicts from the dozen other charges she faces. There are still various verdicts against her that have not been brought to trial.

Some of her other charges include corruption, breaching the official secrets act and electoral fraud.

If she is found guilty on all counts, she may face decades in jail.

On the other hand, her sentences can also run concurrently, reducing jail time. However, that is all determined on a case-by-case basis.

Former President Win Myint Face Same Charges

Former Myanmar president, Win Myint, also faced the same charges as Aung and is looking at four years in prison as well.

However, both of them would not be taken to prison yet. Instead, they will be facing the other charges from the place where they are currently residing.

Aung and her defendants have been kept in an undisclosed location since 1 Feb, the day where the military coup started.

They were not allowed to communicate with the public.

During the proceedings in a special court, journalists were barred and Aung’s lawyers were not allowed to speak to the media. This is because of gag orders imposed on Aung’s entire legal team by the junta.

Due to the gag order and lack of media during Aung’s trial, there was no news report about her testimony when she took the stand in Oct.

Aung’s supporters believe that these cases are baseless and designed to stop her from running in future elections. The supporters also believe that they merely wanted to end Aung’s political career.
