Auxiliary Police Stole a Van & Drove It into a Pillar While Drunk When He is Supposed to be on Sick Leave

Let’s be honest here: how many of us have gone to the panel doctor with a bad case of “stomach-ache”, or “headache” only to use the freed-up time to do whatever we needed or wanted to?

After all, some of us can truly be creative when it comes to giving the perfect excuse to not go to work.

We can be equally creative when we’re supposed to be off “sick” to not get busted by a loose-mouth colleague or – the horror – by your nosy boss.

However, for this 26-year-old auxiliary police officer, he completely busted himself by getting drunk, stealing a truck in broad daylight, and driving it into a pillar.

On 6 April 2021, 26-year-old Dinesh Raj went to the doctor, complaining of breathing difficulties.

He ended up with a five-day sick leave that required him to isolate himself at home.

However, after just three days, cabin fever set in.

He decided to meet up with his two friends at around 1:00am on the 9 April at the rooftop garden on top of a multistorey carpark at Block 165 that’s located along Teck Whye Crescent.

They were drinking some alcohol there and hence, weren’t wearing any masks.

The trio drank until the sun came up, though Dinesh only left the “party” at around 7:00am.

On his way back, Dinesh noticed the backdoor of a truck wasn’t locked and that the spare keys were left inside.

He decided to take it out for a joyride.

However, his ride was cut short fairly quickly by a pillar.

You see, there’s a reason why drunk people aren’t supposed to be driving.

Their senses are impaired and like in Dinesh’s case, he didn’t see the huge pillar in front of him.

As a result, the front of the truck he stole was crumpled in and its windshield was completely shattered.

The poor pillar was also damaged, though not as bad as the truck that was rammed into it.

One of Dinesh’s friends heard the loud bang of the truck hitting the pillar and came over to see what had happened.

She spotted Dinesh in the driver’s seat of the now-damaged truck and managed to pull him out.

As with any accident, someone called the police and they arrived promptly.

When Dinesh noticed the arrival of the police and the ambulance, he knew he was completely screwed, kneeled down, and started crying.

Actions, Even While Drunk, Have Consequences

Dinesh faced seven charges, including motor vehicle theft, as well as the violation of the Highway Traffic Act, and Infectious Diseases Ordinance 2020.

According to the blood sample report as well, his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit of 80mg per 100ml of blood at the time of the crash.

His blood contained 86mg per 100ml.

In his court hearing, Dinesh begged the judge to give him a lighter sentence as he was incredibly remorseful of his actions.

He also asked for a postponement of his sentence by a week so he could deal with the process of resigning from the auxiliary police force.

Despite being regretful, he did violate several laws while drunk and had to serve his time accordingly.

The judge sentenced him to 10 weeks in jail, gave him a fine of S$10,000, and suspended his driver’s license for 2 years.
