Former Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer Ken Ong Wei Qi was sentenced to three weeks’ jail and fined S$6,500 on Thursday (22 October) for offences involving drink driving and lying to police.
The 35-year-old was also banned from holding or obtaining a driving licence for any vehicle class for three years. He had pleaded guilty on 19 October.
His four charges comprised drink driving, driving without due care and attention, and two counts of knowingly giving false information to a public servant.
Crashed After Drinking Whisky
On 14 June 2025, Ong drank three glasses of whisky at Prinsep Street between midnight and 2am. After failing to arrange a driver, he drove towards his home in Pasir Ris.
He lost control of his car and hit a concrete barrier at the Loyang Avenue slip road along the Tampines Expressway towards the Seletar Expressway.
Ong walked home before returning with his father-in-law at about 4:30am. A police officer had already found the damaged, empty car at around 3:50am.
Ong initially denied drinking before driving and claimed he had consumed beer at home afterwards. A subsequent breath test recorded 76 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, more than twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.
He later maintained that he had also drunk beer after reaching home. On 19 June 2026, he admitted that he had consumed alcohol before driving, rather than afterwards. These details were set out in court documents seen by Mothership.
Resigned From ICA Before Sentencing
An ICA spokesperson told AsiaOne that Ong was immediately moved to administrative duties following the accident. He resigned on 19 October, the day of his conviction.
The agency said officers must uphold high standards of integrity and professionalism, and that those who break the law will be dealt with under the law.
