Remember this guy?
Looks familiar? But can’t quite put a finger on it?
Well, he’s none other than local Youtuber Jaze Phua, whose high-quality short films you might’ve watched before.
So what’s up with this guy, you wonder. Well, if you’ve been keeping up with the social media trend, you might be aware of Jaze Phua’s latest creation:
A low-budget remake of Avengers: Endgame’s trailer
In fact, I wrote an entire article pertaining to it, so you can check it out if you wish.
And well… guess what?
It seems that just like his predecessor…
Jaze has managed to capture the attention of his ‘senpai’:
The Russo brothers themselves.
Pure Genius
According to The New Paper, the movie’s directors, Anthony Joseph Russo, have lauded the video as “pure genius”.
And it seems that even the vehemently angry green dude wants in, as actor Mark Ruffalo has expressed on Twitter that he was “struggling to see the difference” between the original trailer and the parody.
A Dream Come True
Suffice it to say, Jaze was overjoyed when learnt of the ‘unexpected feedback’.
The 27-year-old, who runs a production company, first heard about the Russos’ tweet when a friend woke him to inform him about it on Sunday (7 April).
And apparently, it felt like a dream.
“My first thought was this is going to be on my resume to enter Hollywood,” he said.
“I’m very honoured.”
A Budget Remake In Its Truest SenseÂ
The 2 minute 27 second video cost just $12.70 to produce, including fried chicken for his cast members.
Using materials around his MacPherson office and white board markers (that supposedly cost $2.70), he managed to ‘recreate’ Thor’s Stormbreaker, Iron Man’s arc reactor and the new Avengers space suits that were introduced towards the end of the official trailer for Avengers: Endgame.
As for the cast members, former schoolmates Douglas Tan, 28, and Ian Chua, 27, helped out, with the former taking on the role of Captain America and the latter playing both Hawkeye and The Hulk.
Friends Kua Wanlin, 23, a childcare teacher, played Black Widow and Nebula, while Melanie Tay, 24, played Captain Marvel.
Jaze, on the other hand, played multiple roles including Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man and Falcon.
Talk about a man with multiple talents.
“We couldn’t recreate Nebula’s make-up so we just put blue plastic bags on our heads,” Jaze said.
“In the scene where Hawkeye was running away from an explosion, my friends and I were literally just holding up orange cloth and it was all just so silly that we couldn’t stop laughing.”
Most of the scenes were filmed around his office, but the opening “desert” parody was shot at East Coast Park. The space suit reveal, too, was shot at his alma mater, the National Technological University’s Art, Design and Media school lobby.
Jaze’s trailer was filmed and edited within seven days.
And I bet you’re wondering; what now for Jaze?
Well, for now, it seems that Jaze is hoping that the actor behind his favourite superhero, Iron Man, will give his video a nod.
“I’m hoping that Robert Downey Jr will retweet the video but, even if he just watches it, I will be content,” Phua said.
Now, I might not be sure about a lot of things.
But hey, I’m pretty sure Mark would’ve shown this to his co-stars at one point or another.
“Hey guys, Hulk here. Check this video out. It’s sickkkk.”
