Pets are so precious to us.

Pets (corgis, corgis and especially corgis) are just so cute.

That is why if anyone is seen abusing these precious creatures, we jump to their defence with all our might.

Perhaps… a little too eager.

Alleged Animal Abuse

With the advent of social media, all of a suddenly netizens of Singapore have become Batman.

They may not wear a cape and have super hi-tech gadgets, but they are always on patrol with their trusty smartphone camera and ammunition of like-minded followers who will respond to their posts of injustice.

This happened for one Facebook user, who wanted to share about an instance of alleged animal abuse.

The Facebook user took pictures and a video of the alleged abuse of the poor dog.

The Facebook user saw that the dog was in what seems to be deleterious health. Moreover, seeing that the dog was leashed to the outside of the apartment, with “dirty” bowls only available around it confirmed her suspicions that the animal was being ill-treated.

She then posted the incident on Facebook, to share her disgust online.

This resulted in many netizens sharing their disgust as well.

Some even go so far as to concoct wild theories to explain the incident.

Wow.

A Huge Misunderstanding

Due to the huge fuss that was created over this incident, the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) conducted a check on the family that was accused of abuse.

As it turns out, it was a huge misunderstanding after all.

Despite the AVS confirming that no abuse took place, there were several citizens who still felt that they knew better.

Consequences

It seems that the party accused of the mistreatment is very angry about the false allegations.

It seems that there might be legal consequences for the Facebook user.

Instead of sharing the post on social media, she should have instead either approached the owners or the proper authorities to handle it.

Social Justice Warriors

In today’s day and age, people fall easily for sensationalised news. Netizens often share salacious articles that have not been fact-checked, commonly articles that provoke some kind of emotional response.

“Oh no, that poor baby is being mistreated.” And the post is then circulated to thousands of other Facebook users.

Let’s face it. People share or post articles like these for entertainment, not to raise awareness or create any action.

So, moral of the story?

Don’t anyhowly, please.
